Steps of Execution |
by Fëanor |
- Poppy and I went to see X-Men: Last Stand this weekend, and neither of us know what all the critics are complaining about. Fantastic movie! Seriously, we both loved it. Totally a ton of fun. No, not a lot of character development, but what do you expect, for God's sake? Anyway, it's probably my favorite of the three movies, but I'd want to watch them all again before I finalized that statement. Who's up for an X-Men day? Also, does anybody believe what they're saying about not making a fourth one of these? I mean, c'mon now. They'd be throwing money away if they didn't.
- Finished Venus,Inc. which I've already blogged about earlier. My original feelings about The Merchant's War were pretty much confirmed, although the story did remain interesting enough to keep me reading until the end. It's pretty much an attempt to recapture the greatness of the original novel (Space Merchants) by telling a very similar story. But it's just not as good, and then it has a corny ending where the author tries to sort of "fix" the hideous world he's created. But when you start out writing a deeply pessimistic, brutal satire of humanity and consumer society, it's hard to make a u-turn and suddenly become super-optimistic about humanity and their ability to throw off the reigns of said society, with just a few mawkish commercials to set them off. Doesn't work!
- Really, really enjoying Wizard and Glass way too much, and I am deeply ashamed. (That's the fourth book in Stephen King's Dark Tower series, for those of you who haven't been following along at home.) Could have sworn this was the one I disliked so much that I stopped reading the series, but I guess that must have been The Wasteland, because I actually really like this one, and I don't remember it at all. Maybe my taste is getting bad?
- A couple of rules for movies I came up with this weekend while flipping through the channels: If a film contains a scene in which a dog pees on someone, and this scene is meant to be humorous in and of itself, the film is bad and you can stop watching it immediately. Similarly, if a film contains a scene in which someone is water skiing very badly, and this scene is meant to be humorous in and of itself, the film is bad and you can stop watching it immediately.
- Anybody know of a good place to pick up a NEW PS2 cheap? I don't care which version of the system, slim or not, I just don't want a used one; I've heard too many stories about the things breaking. FYE in the Gallery has a mail-in rebate deal where you get the system for $100, which is really the best deal I've seen so far, but I'd rather not give my money to them if I can help it.
- In my lengthy project to rip all my CDs and put them on my iPod (in alphabetical order by artist, of course), I have now reached the letter "W." Very exciting! Of course, after this I'll have to go through Poppy's CDs, and then make sure I've got all the good stuff off those sampler CDs I've got laying around, but that shouldn't take me too much longer...
- A final note: no one speak to me, or near me, about the "Lost" finale yet. It is on the aforementioned iPod, but has not been watched by me yet. If you spoil it for me, I will eat your brains. |
