Spider-Man, Spider-Man, eats as much as a spider can...
 by Fëanor

Now that I'm on this comics kick, I finally got around to reading all those reprints of the original issues of Amazing Spider-Man that they were putting in the newspaper a while back. (Thanks to my father-in-law for collecting them for me! I don't seem to have a complete collection, and actually I don't even know if they're still putting these out, but I've got about 20 issues.) And I have to say, I'm really, really surprised at how much I'm enjoying them. Stan Lee's writing is a bit bombastic and ridiculous, of course, but it's also clever, funny, imaginative, and a ton of fun. The stories are fast-moving, packed with action and humor, and the character of Peter Parker is actually a really interesting one. He's sort of a proto-Buffy the vampire slayer, in that he has to deal with all those teen angst issues while also saving the world, and often the trials he goes through as Spider-Man are kind of symbolic of troubles that your average teenager faces. He also has a hard time keeping the super-hero faith, often considering giving up the gig so he can live a normal life, partially because J. Jonah Jameson is constantly on his case, always trying to convince everyone (and often succeeding!) that Spider-Man is a vigilante, a public menace, and a dangerous fool just trying to get attention.

It's a really interesting story that's really quite different than many of your average super-hero comics, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm also surprised that Mary Jane hasn't even shown up yet, and I'm 12 issues in! Of course, they seem to have split each of the original comics into two issues, so I think that means I'm actually only six issues in, but still.
