I should be in bed, but...
 by Fëanor

...instead I've spent the last half hour or so researching Tolkien's Elvish language and imagery in an attempt to find myself a new tattoo graphic. I think I've settled on the following:

It's the badge of Elendil, who was a great man, the forebear of Aragorn, the father of Isildur and Anárion, last lord of Andúnië, and the first High King of Arnor and Gondor. His name is a word in the Elven language Quenya, and means "elf-friend" or "star-lover." (Elen is the Quenya word for star.) The image above is his name written in the Tengwar writing system (a writing system that was devised by Fëanor, I might add), with the vowels removed, as was often the custom when writing certain words with the Tengwar. His name written in this fashion was often used as his badge and a device on his seals.

So, it's a symbol from my favorite books probably of all time, it marks me as a man of Elendil, and in a way it also says I was a friend of Star. Which is all excellent. But the thing that finally decided me on this particular image was when I was looking at the chart of Tengwar symbols in the back of Return of the King and noticed that the symbol that appears twice in Elendil's name is labeled number 27. 27 is my lucky number. I'm going to go ahead and take that as a sign.

I wish I knew a way to blow up this image bigger so it'll be easier for the tattoo artist to apply. Maybe I need to redraw it, or get somebody to redraw it for me...

Anyways, I really should get to sleep now.
