More on Tattoos - Lots of Pics! |
by Fëanor |
Here's that photo of Sarah's tattoo I promised I'd try to get:
And here are some other symbols I considered using as my tattoo.
The Star of Fëanor:
This seemed like a perfect idea, except for the fact that I didn't particularly like the image. There's also a jewel called the Star of Elendil (well, actually, there were two, as one was lost and then a replica was made) which also seems like a cool idea conceptually, except it was just a jewel (which isn't that interesting as an object), and there are no illustrations of it that I could find.
Another possibility was the device of Gondor, which is a white tree surmounted by seven stars. The device of the house of Elendil, used by the Kings that came after him, was another idea, and it looks pretty much the same, except there's a crown added in above the stars. The only problem with these images is that they'd probably have to be pretty big and elaborate to look any good. Maybe if this tattoo goes well I'll consider something like this, but for my first one... I don't think so.
I also considered other words written in the Tengwar, such as the word "elen," which is star in Quenya:
Another possibility was the English word "star" written out in the Tengwar. (Since the Tengwar is simply a system for writing out consonantal sounds, it can be used to write just about any language you can think of, including English.)
However, I wasn't a big fan of the way "elen" looks written out, and although I do like the way "star" looks in the Tengwar, it feels like it's kind of cheating to have an English word in the Tengwar. I'd rather go all the way and do an Elvish word in an Elvish writing system, rather than go halfway with an English word in an Elvish writing system. (Is it Elvish or Elven? I don't know.)
But hey, cool! My brother just hooked me up with a much, MUCH bigger image of my final choice. I've shrunk it down a bit so I can display it below. Thanks, bro!
