In Rainbows |

So, as you've probably already heard, Radiohead has a new album, and they put it up for sale themselves - no record company is involved - as a download on the internet. When you go to purchase it, you yourself get to enter the price, in pounds. A message on the screen tells you "IT'S UP TO YOU." I went with 5 pounds, to which was automatically added a 45 pence credit charge. I figure I paid a bit more than 10 American dollars for the album, which seems reasonable to me. For my money I got a download code/URL, and I'll be using it when I get home from work.
It's an amazing and rather cheeky thing to do, what they're doing. They're sidestepping the entire way that the music industry works. It's not exactly The Future of Music, as it's obviously not something just any band could do - they can do it and expect it to work because they're Radiohead. But it is a big deal, and I hope it succeeds phenomenally. |
