Beware the Jabberwock! No, seriously, beware. |
by Fëanor |
The other night, poppy and I sat down to watch Terry Gilliam's Jabberwocky (1977), which is meant to be a sort of creative adaptation of Lewis Carroll's famous nonsense poem. We got through maybe 20 minutes before we decided to turn it off. I guess we should have expected that in the hands of Terry Gilliam a fun, comedic bit of fluff about knights and monsters and adventure would turn into an unbearably filthy, dark and awful film, that is not only devoid of likable characters, but lacks even a person who is not utterly repulsive. In fact, its main purpose seems to be to show us how despicable and disgusting humanity is. Sure, that's what most of Gilliam's films are doing, but usually he goes about it in a way that's entertaining and stylish, instead of completely unwatchable. |
