Eve Eve
 by Fëanor

A couple of website updates, in case you're not subscribed to the rss feed: another film festival diary entry finally went out today (only eight months late!), and some new pictures showed up in the Miscellaneous group on my photography page.

A quick search of Google News reveals that not much new is going on, except for some cool space stuff.

As for me, last night I played this cool game at Peccable and TrackerNeil's place called Taiko Drum Master. Normally I shy away from rhythm games or games with gimicky controllers (like a giant drum and plastic sticks), but this one was a ton of fun, and I was surprisingly good at it. Sadly, it looks like I'd have to buy a whole new system to be able to play it, so I'll probably just have to trick Peccable into letting me play it when I'm over his place sometimes. And it sounds like I might be able to play it at Sarcasmo's place, too, soon enough...

I recently finished reading Hellboy Volume 1: Seed of Destruction, which was courteously leant to me by The Pinkhaired One. She didn't seem too wowed by it, but I found it quite enjoyable. It was really almost nothing like the movie, which is good, because I didn't care too much for the movie. My only complaints are that it was a bit too talkie for a comic (a lot of times Mignola slapped some clumsy, explanatory interior monologue text all over a scene that was working fine with just the visuals), and it felt strangely rushed. I mean, apparently this was the first storyline in the Hellboy comic book, but it feels like one that should come in the middle or near the end, after we've gotten to know Hellboy and his fellow paranormal investigators. I mean, it seems so important and final, dealing as it does with the end of the world and the secret behind Hellboy's mysterious origin and purpose (I was pretty disappointed that the wizard guy could just switch up and use Liz instead of Hellboy as the power source for his spell; that was kind of lame. I mean really, the fickle nature of doom and prophecies these days!). The book asks us to take it for granted that Hellboy is a great paranormal investigator and has seen a lot of crap in his time. Where are the issues leading up to this that show all that stuff? The movie, mundane as it is, at least gives us the pretense of backstory and characterization. In this book, we barely get to know Liz and she hardly speaks before she's suddenly pivotal to the story. Why should we care about her? Who is she?

But anyway, the book is still very entertaining and tells a good, creepy, Lovecraftian story with lots of cool frog people and tentacled god-monsters. Plus, now I finally know what the deal is with that Darkest of the Hillside Thickets song called "Ogdru Jahad" on Cthulhu Strikes Back.

Seed of Destruction also has some cool one-offs in the back that apparently were promotional Hellboy stories Mignola did before starting the official comic. They're not very deep or cerebral, but they're a ton of fun. I mean, how can you not like a giant cybernetic monkey being ordered to suck the fluids out of a young girl by the head of a Nazi suspended in a glass jar? Awesome.

I've got the day off tomorrow and not much planned, so hopefully I can get some work done on some of my personal projects, or at least play some computer games. I couldn't sleep last night, so I got in some Knights of the Old Republic, and it was very satisfying; I killed Darth Malak's apprentice and two of his buddies after a hard-fought battle. I've caught the RPG bug big time now, though, and I'm getting kind of scared. I mean, I'm itching to go out and buy more books and examine more systems. I'm trying to invent ways of translating things like football into roleplaying systems; I'm trying to think of ways that I can do more roleplaying, or at least play through more D&D combat sessions. I even visited the official Star Wars roleplaying game website today. *shiver*

Seriously, somebody might have to sit me down and take my dice away from me.
