On the Viewer - Dollhouse (Episode 4, "Gray Hour")
 by Fëanor

As usual, many spoilers follow. Definitely skip this post if you haven't seen the episode yet.

Hey, it's Helo again! Oh, wait...

Jesus, Echo's a midwife now? Echo: "Little Lucy has linebacker shoulders." Father: "So, she's gonna be a lesbian?" HA!

Mother: "I wanna forget, I wanna forget!" So creepy. There are constant parallels to Echo's situation in every episode.

Speaking of creepy, the actives are very creepy when they talk to each other in their tabula rasa state. Topher sees Echo, Victor, and Sierra hanging out together and thinks they're "flocking."

Miss DeWitt tells a customer, "No one knows the details of your engagements but you." That's total BS! DeWitt, you liar, you! And hey, woah, DeWitt has a superior! And he's calling to check in with her about the whole thing with Officer Ballard. Huh. Who is this guy? Oh, and he hung up on her.

Man, has Echo ever been on a mission that went entirely right? I guess that very first one we saw at the beginning of the first episode went pretty well, where she just had to give the guy the night of his life...

Oh, that was awesome. They totally tricked me on that one. I really thought her mission was to be that guy's bachelor party fun-time, and that she honestly got beat up by him, but nope! Instead, it's a heist! That rules. Excellent work all around, team!

Echo: "They're called breasts, and yes, they're exceptional. You can mention that when you blog about this later." I will! I am!

This may be the coolest character Echo has ever been. I love a good heist!

"What are we taking out of here?"
"The Parthenon."
"Isn't that kinda big?"
Heh.

Ooh, just thought of something. What if Ballard's stalkery neighbor is also an active? Like she actually really is stalking him, to keep an eye on him? Hmmm...

Victor didn't set up Ballard? Huh. Not sure I'd believe that. If I were Ballard, I might just shoot him and say he was breaking and entering, which he was.

Aaannd... the heist goes horribly awry. The way they always do!

Holy crap. Somebody just wiped Echo's mind over the phone. At the worst possible time!

OK, this is interesting. They're sending Sierra in as backup with the same identity Echo had. Is that a great idea? Won't that confuse the crap out of Echo's partners? And possibly Echo? Also, I like that they're promising Sierra double her usual fee to extract Echo and her team. If they give her the money at all, they'll just take it right back once they wipe her mind.

I love the way DeWitt rolls her eyes at Sierra while she's not looking.

I'm amused by the interplay between Topher and his assistant. Also, Topher is already developing a conspiracy theory about the remote wipe, just like a good nerd would.

Oh, no, Boyd's going in, too. This is gonna get worse before it gets better...

And now Echo and her team are going to be waiting to shoot whoever opens the door. That's not going to go well.

Sierra, of Dominic: "Nervous Nellie. He's actually kinda sweet." Heh.

Echo, to thief: "This is fun! Are you having fun?Thief: "No."

Oops. Drilling didn't work. And now we've got more guys on standby to kill Echo. This mission is becoming even more of a clusterfuck than usual.

Okay, some kind of muscle memory or something definitely kicked in there for Echo.

Wait, just shooting an electronic keypad lock will allow you to open the door? That seems like a security flaw. Did MythBusters look at that one yet?

Ah. Ballard didn't really fall for Victor's story after all.

I thought Dominic was going to drop the marble for a second there. I think somebody would have killed him.

As we all pretty much figured, Alpha is not really dead. They made him too well, and they can't find him.

Wait, won't the fact that Victor's now wanted by the police, the FBI, and, I assume, the Russian mob make it harder for him to go out on missions as an active?

They give us the suggestion again, at the very end, that there might be something still knocking around in Echo's head after her wipe.

The buzz on this show amongst geeks and the media seems to be generally rather negative, and I don't really understand why. I'm definitely enjoying it. It keeps playing with my expectations and surprising me. And there's always something different and exciting going on each episode, that still somehow plays into the continuing story of Echo and Alpha. It's intelligent and disturbing and thought-provoking. I look forward to the next episode.
