A boring post, because I'm tired
 by Fëanor

  • A follow-up to defective yeti's Phantom Menace post: how to watch Attack of the Clones. He mentions a couple of interesting arguments/analyses about the film; for instance, that the cliched, melodramatic, maudlin nature of the love scenes is actually half-way accurate to the way young teens in love express themselves. But that's kind of the old "it's bad on purpose argument," to which I must always answer, "Okay, but it's still bad, and thus not something I want to watch." He takes apart the "but these movies were made for kids" argument by point out that yes, they were made for kids, but they're also all about taxation and political machinations. Lucas is trying to have his cake and eat it, too, and it's hard to take a scenes about complex sociopolitical forces seriously when it's followed up by a scene with a goofy-talking alien stumbling into a pile of animal dung.

  • But despite all of that...I still do love me some Star Wars. Speaking of which, I now have my lightsabers back, and am furthermore the proud owner of a portrait of Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The former were given to me by my parents last night when we came by for a Father's Day dinner; the latter was given to me yesterday afternoon as a housewarming gift from my brother and his wife. Poppy got some stuff, too (a rug and other useful items), but I like my painting, which the bloginator painted himself some years ago (for a class, if I remember correctly). I think it will hang over my desk in the loft, so the wise Jedi Master can look down on me and inspire me as I play video games and write blog posts and such.

The bloginator, his wife, and both sets of parents (mine and poppy's) helped us out a lot this weekend, actually, besides just giving us gifts. The apartment is nearly packed, and the condo is looking pretty good.

  • So yeah, everything went fine with closing and with the condo so far, except for the fact that the lawyer for the seller's relocation company showed up late and rather ill, and for a little while our new wireless doorbell was ringing somebody else's bell in a neighboring condo, as well as ours. But the lawyer wasn't too sick to sign some papers, and the doorbell code was easily changed, so everything turned out okay.

  • I leave you with a question I overheard asked by a little girl behind us in the supermarket check-out line: "Mommy, is Michael Jackson a boy or a girl?"
