Let's See What's on the TV
 by Fëanor

I just finished watching the first disc of season one of "Carnivale" (that's the first two episodes, btw). This show premiered on HBO before I had HBO, but I thought the ads for it looked really cool back then, so now I'm catching up with it, thanks to the mighty creation that is Netflix. And holy crap, is it totally fantastic. I am so hooked.

It's completely the opposite of the kind of show poppy likes: it's got a long story arc that continues over many episodes, and it's kind of scary, and it has a creepy dwarf (it's that dude from "Twin Peaks," TV's original creepy dwarf! He's so awesome; he makes me think of Tyrion). The prologue to the first episode (spoken by said creepy dwarf--btw, no offense meant to the little people of the world. But the guy is a little creepy) suggests that the series is about an age-old conflict between good and evil, as well as another conflict between reason and magic. Our two main characters are a farm boy who's just stumbled into a job with a travelling circus (the titular Carnivale) and a priest, each with amazing abilities. We have yet to learn for certain which stands for good and which for evil, but it seems pretty obvious to me that the farm boy is the good guy. The series is set in a mythical version of 1940s Western America. Think Grapes of Wrath with magic and psychics.

My favorite line of the series so far came from the fortune teller named Sophie. She says all the people in the towns they travel through are asleep. They sleepwalk through their lives and their jobs. And, she says, "We wake them up."

So, yeah, my TV show watching is going to get complicated when the new season of "Lost" starts (whenever that will be--I find it quite difficult to keep track of their schedules). I'm going to be watching "Firefly," "Farscape," and "Carnivale" on DVD, and "Lost" and "Battlestar Galactica" on TV. I think this is the season when I will finally stop watching "Alias." It's really not that good anymore, and I just don't think I can juggle that many shows.

Although...I really am curious as to Vaughn's real identity...and how they're going to work Jennifer Garner's pregnancy into the plot...

Damn you, J. J. Abrams! Damn you to hell!

But anyway, speaking of TV, "Battlestar Galactica" is just about to start. Peace out, folks.
