  • A post or two ago, I whined about the fact that cool movie stuff was going on in NYC, but I didn't want to go to NYC. Now I must do this again, this time with LA. There's a Sergio Leone exhibition going on out there at the Museum of the American West. There are even three free outdoor screenings of his films.

    Damn it!

  • There are a couple of interesting news items in Cinematical's regular summary of the latest issue of Variety: first of all, Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller are going to star as obsolete models of pleasure clones on the run in UsedGuys, directed by Jay Roach. Although you couldn't pay me to see many of the films that Roach, Carrey, and Stiller have made over the years, having all three of these guys together working on a story like this, which actually sounds quite funny to me, could work. I'll keep an eye on this one.

Secondly, we have the news that John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) is directing an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel (Killshot) about a hitman, and it's "likely" to star Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke. Some pretty big talents getting together here, too. Again, I'll have to keep an eye on this one (although I am now rapidly running out of eyes).

  • Supposedly the crew on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is keeping it real. By which I mean, they're sticking close to the original novel. This is good news, if it's true.

  • De Niro's next movie, The Good Shepherd (which is, unsurprisingly, about cops and criminals--specifically, it covers the life of one of the founding members of the CIA), has got a pretty amazing cast, if FilmJerk (via Cinematical) is to be believed. There's De Niro himself, of course, and then we've got Matt Damon, William Hurt, Timothy Hutton, Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, Keir Dullea (haven't seen him since 2010!), Michael Gambon, John Turturro, and now Joe Pesci. Impressive stuff! Unfortunately, I've noticed over the years that movies with more than their share of amazing actors tend to be, counter-intuitively, really really bad. But we'll see.

  • Again via Cinematical (I don't have much to talk about today that didn't come to me by way of that particular site, actually), we find this excellent trailer for a fine looking film called Good Night, And Good Luck. It's directed by George Clooney (whose debut in the big chair behind the camera, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, was a bit uneven but very promising), and stars him, as well as David Strathairn, Robert Downey Jr., Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels, and Frank Langella (seems like I'm doing a lot of listing of talented actors today). And on top of all of that, it's also got an interesting story--about Edward R. Murrow's campaign against Senator Joe McCarthy's Communist witch hunts. I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

  • This bit of news sounds very vague and preliminary at this point, but wouldn't it be awesome if Ridley Scott and Tsui Hark did end up working together on something? Yes, they're both uneven filmmakers, but when they hit, they hit hard. Tsui Hark's talent for staging and filming a great action scene coupled with Scott's talent for filming great character drama could produce the Holy Grail of the film world (for me, anyway)--an exciting action film with a great story and interesting characters. I'll keep my fingers crossed...
