Gnus 3: The Beginning
 by Fëanor

  • I haven't mentioned the Katrina tragedy here yet, because it's too depressing. But I thought some things needed to be brought to your attention, in case you hadn't heard about them (thanks to kds for the first link; the second one I think came to me via Salon). I don't particularly like the way Salon is constantly making use of the terrible events down South to make political arguments. But then again, the lack of preparedness and the poor response is certainly at least partially the fault of Bush's administration. And I don't want him and his cronies to get away with another ridiculous lie--it is a pure falsehood that no one saw this coming. New Orleans has been unprepared for a hurricane of this magnitude and people have been aware of that for years now, but not enough was done about it, and that's the hard truth of the situation.

  • Now that that's out of the way, let's get back to silly stories about movies and such: This is crappy news, I think, despite the comedy inherent in the Elizabeth II idea. There were good things about the original Elizabeth, but ultimately I found its style ridiculously overblown and over-important. Although, Clive Owen in a period piece does sound cool...

  • DO NOT READ THIS if you wish to avoid possible Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire spoilers. But I've read it, and I'm excited.

  • I'd read and seen random things about this Flying Spaghetti Monster thing over the past week or so, but hadn't actually tracked it to its source until yesterday. Now I can truly say that I have been touched by his noodly appendage. You should go and be touched, too!

  • We've taken our first step into a larger world: there will be no VHS release for Revenge of the Sith. Technology is following so closely on its own heels now, though, that just as we're finally discarding the previous format and settling on the DVD as the new format, they're fighting over which will be the next format--BluRay or HD-DVD.

  • I love haikus, writing, and movies, so I'm kind of angry that the idea of writing haiku movie reviews wasn't invented by myself. I'm definitely going to have to compose some and post them as comments over there.

  • This week, Sarcasmo points us towards an opportunity to have our names blasted off to Pluto (an opportunity which, I can assure you, I did not pass up). She also provides us with access to this odd claymation video which I swear must have been made by Ryuhei Kitamura, despite what the credits say. Who else would make a film with such a weird sense of humor, in which a seemingly normal (comparatively) person suddenly transforms into a new and more powerful creature when thrown into a duel with a supernatural force?
