Fruits of the Damned
 by Fëanor

  • Crap! The Publishers Weekly review of Knife of Dreams, the latest (and 11th!!!) Wheel of Time book, which can be found on this Amazon.com page, makes me feel like I should pick this series up again. My main complaint with it was that it just wasn't going anywhere. Nothing really happened at all in the last book I read, and then I saw that one of the following books in the series was actually a prequel--Jordan had found a way of not just standing still, but of actually going backwards. I became convinced then that he was now just writing in order to stretch the series out as long as he could, and thus make as much money as possible. But this review says Jordan has finally revved up the action in Knife, concluding some of his storylines and moving things closer to the final battle. I'm really curious. But I'm not sure I'm curious enough to actually pick up this series again. It looks like I'd have a lot of work ahead of me, as I don't even recognize half the characters and plotlines they mention in the review.

  • As you'll see in the third bullet point down (I always seem to like the third bullet points in these stories for some reason), Seraphim Falls is a psychological action film set after the Civil War and starring Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Sounds awesome.

  • At first I thought this story about Shaolin Monks was going to be about the new Mortal Kombat game that's coming out, which is subtitled Shaolin Monks (and is only for PS2 and Xbox, of course, damn it!!! I've got to get me one of those PS3s...), but it turns out it's about the actual real Shaolin Monks and their plan to capitalize off of their fame by making their own movies and video games. Sweet!

  • Defective Yeti has returned to his former greatness with this post on nominee for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts's refusal to answer directly where he stands on Logan v. Wayne--that being, of course, the age-old question, "Who would win in a fight: Wolverine or Batman?"

I sympathize with Roberts, as I myself am not sure which side to support in this polarizing debate. While I certainly prefer Batman as a character, he has a difficult opponent in Wolverine, what with the adamantium skeleton and claws and the amazing regenerative healing abilities. Still, Wolverine's not known for his brains. I bet Batman could outsmart and immobilize him.

  • Btw, tonight poppy and I checked out the premiers of two new TV shows--"Bones" and "Supernatural." The former is based on a series of books (or a true story, or something), and stars David Boreanaz (of "Buffy" and "Angel" fame) trying very hard to remember that he's not a vampire anymore. The dialogue he's spouting in his new show can't be helping him to forget his former role, as the writers seem to have been trying desperately to emulate the clever, snappy, pop culture-laced, sarcastic dialogue of Joss Whedon. And failing, btw. The show follows a forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel) as she tries to deal with her emotional issues, fight off the inevitable attraction to her male lead (Boreanaz), and solve crimes along the way. It's pretty corny, and has plenty of ridiculously specious science and technology. We were not impressed.

The next show to completely underwhelm us, "Supernatural," did so even faster. It's just another of WB's "pretty young people with problems" shows masquerading as horror/sci fi. The characters are boring stereotypes, the dialogue flat and silly, the story cliche.

Frankly, I'm very pleased. I couldn't handle having to watch even more TV shows.
