- First of all, Happy Birthday, Bloginator! You're the only person whose birthday I am guaranteed never to forget, because it's the same as my own!
- Second of all, Happy Birthday, Me!
Although, unfortunately, my birthday wasn't very happy this morning. I woke up really tired (despite the fact that I got to bed at a relatively reasonable time last night--for me, anyway), feeling addled and confused (possibly because of the tired thing), and then my allergies started acting up. When I finally got to work, I found that I had barely enough milk left to cover the bottom of my cereal bowl, and that there were no more spoons. I was reduced to eating mostly dry Cheerios (and a banana) with a fork, and, of course, cursing impotently at life.
But now that I'm inside and I've taken some allergy medication, I'm feeling a lot better. And those Cheerios were still good enough, even if they weren't as moist as one might hope.
- Last night I saw Everything Is Illuminated, and it's very good. (Btw, as a side note, due to this excursion, I haven't had a chance to watch my tape of the season premier of "Lost" yet, so to those of you who have already watched the show, TELL ME NOTHING or I will KILL YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS. Thank you.) It gets a little corny sometimes (especially at the end), and it generally takes the predictable course for a movie of this type (after a comical journey of discovery that leads to sad revelation, all the characters learn a great deal about themselves and each other, and become better people). And maybe it's because I knew there was a first-time director helming the picture (actor Liev Schreiber, who doesn't appear in the film), but this feels like a directorial debut. It's got the cliches, the attempts at profundity, and the artsy camera-work and editing that you might expect from someone just starting out.
But still, I don't want to overstate the negatives here. The movie is very well acted, scripted, and filmed; there are many beautiful visuals, and some powerful lessons; the funny parts of the film are quite funny, and the moving parts are quite moving. What more can you ask of a movie? Everything Is Illuminated is very effective, and Schreiber looks to be a promising new directorial talent.
- Yes! Fraggle Rock movie!!!
I don't know why I'm so excited. I've never really seen much of the show; I could never watch it when I was a kid because it was on some channel we didn't get or something. But maybe that's why--it's this cool thing that was always off-limits. Plus, I like muppets.
- Another strange and great Monkeys in the News story: "Monkey regains sense of power by slapping lions." The little monkey tyrant king was deposed, and has now stooped to slapping around defenseless lion cubs. That's messed up, dude.
- I'm not sure I've ever come across a quiz whose result seemed more inaccurate. Did I answer the questions wrong? Or is there more to me than I realized? (UPDATE: Credit where credit is due; I got to this quiz via sarcasmoscorner.)
| You scored as Richelieu. You are Cardinal Richelieu, prelate of France. Manipulation and puppetmastering are your stock-in-trade, and you always have two or three schemes going at once. You don't have a need for romance, because you figure lovers out too quickly and then they bore you. You are a treacherous friend and a downright dangerous enemy.Richelieu | | 55% | Athos | | 50% | Mercedes | | 45% | Aramis | | 45% | Edmund Dantes | | 40% | D'Artagnan | | 35% | Rochefort | | 35% | Porthos | | 25% | Which Dumas character are you?created with QuizFarm.com |
- Another fantastic clip from the Wallace and Gromit movie is available at the BBC. Unfortunately, it's only in Real Player format, and also, the clip doesn't seem to have it's own dedicated page, so I'm not sure how long it will be on the URL I've posted above, which means you should check it out soon before it disappears. (Thanks go to Cinematical for the link.)
- On some guy's LJ, I found this movie of a guy dressed as a ninja jumping around and climbing things. It's fun!
- I couldn't read this whole long article about Nintendo and innovation in video games, because it was really long and stuff, but the bits of it I managed to choke down were quite interesting and insightful. (I think I came across this at Penny Arcade, but Peccable might have linked to it, too.)
