Gurgles and Splutters
 by Fëanor

  • All I had for lunch today was a big order of french fries. But it's okay, because it's my birthday!

  • The fact that it's my birthday is also my excuse for posting way too much today. It's really a great, catch-all excuse for all kinds of stupid crap! It probably wouldn't work on the cops, though, if I went on a murder spree. So I guess I'll stop planning that...

  • To continue on this topic (I'll stop talking about it soon, I swear), this is kind of weird: Brad Shipston on The Movie Blog has the exact same birthday as me; same year and everything. I did not, however, get the Complete Superman DVD Collection for my birthday, like he did, for which I'm rather grateful; those movies really aren't that good.

  • Yay, Hayao Miyazaki! I love that guy. As poppy would say (although she'd be talking about Bono, or Michael Stipe, or possibly Bill Clinton), I'd totally have his babies. Anyway, despite his (apparently) regular policy of shunning awards shows, he showed up at Venice to accept his (well-earned) lifetime achievement award. Go you, Miyazaki!

Of course, this doesn't mean Miyazaki's life's work is over, despite his constant claims that whatever film he happens to be working on at the time is his last one. In fact, there are rumors circulating now that Miyazaki might be adapting Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea books. Now, I'm not a huge LeGuin fan, and I don't think I've ever read those particular books, but for whatever reason, this is still exciting news to me, and I think it will be even more exciting to some of you. So, go on. Get excited!

  • I seem to have forgotten to include a link in my last post to The Producers website, where you can watch a pretty amusing and encouraging trailer of the new movie, which is based on the musical, which itself was based on the original film by Mel Brooks. Yeah, it's another one of those weird re-adaptation type things. On this version of The Producers, Mel Brooks is himself just a producer; a woman named Susan Stroman is directing. I like the cast, I like the original movie, and this is a fun trailer; I think this one will be good, despite the fact that it seems pretty pointless.

  • Sometimes I doubt the veracity of the quotes posted in Overheard in Philly, but A Double Scoop of Stupid rings powerfully of unadulterated truth. It's also hilarious.

  • A couple of movie review anthology posts on The Movie Blog: one for David Cronenberg's A History of Violence and one for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. Violence I've wanted to see since I first saw the trailer; Corpse I wasn't so interested in. But as these posts show, both are getting plenty of very good reviews, which means I have to check them both out. When I'll get the chance, I don't know, as I'm only just getting out to see Transporter 2 this coming Sunday, but we'll see.
