Blurgal! |
by Fëanor |
We have returned, and so I bring you once again my regular bullet-pointed list of links, personal history, and random observations.
- Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood (along with some other rockers who don't excite me as much because I don't know anything about them) is appearing as a member of a band that plays Hogwarts Academy in Goblet of Fire. Not only that, the band has recorded a couple of songs for the soundtrack. Here's a zip file that includes one of them: "This Is the Night." It's pretty cool, beyond the obvious fact that Radiohead + Harry Potter = Crazy Awesome Fanboy Combination.
- Hey, there's a new Predator movie coming! Why didn't anybody tell me? Or did I forget? Anyway, it's not really a sequel, and it's not really a remake - it's a reset, like Batman Begins. Could be cool. We'll have to see until more information appears and this solidifies a bit more.
- A "Sin City" TV series? It could work on HBO, I guess. I hope this ends up in the right hands, or it could be a disaster.
- Via Movie Blog, enjoy animated gif versions of Star Wars, Episodes IV and V. They're not great art, but they're amusing and impressive in their own way.
- I always like it when bad things happen to The Da Vinci Code, so I enjoyed reading this story about the authors of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail suing Random House (and Dan Brown, I assume) for ripping off their stuff. They claim large chunks of Da Vinci Code were lifted right out of their book, and from what I've heard of both books, they have a pretty good case. Hee, hee.
- Time for another list, people. This is the top 100 films of all time, from Total Film magazine. As far as I can tell, only the top 10 are available for viewing online. Oddly enough, Goodfellas is number 1! I like that movie, but I think it's flawed, and there's no way it would make it anywhere near my top ten*. I would also argue with the inclusion of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which I think is similarly flawed, and His Girl Friday, which I think is entertaining, but way overrated. Also, the number three spot is a pretty high (or low, depending on how you look at such things) position for Jaws. But otherwise, I guess it's an okay top ten. I can't believe they put Casablanca way down (or up) at 98, though. What up with that?
- Good news for fans of Japanese animation, or really of film in general: TCM is going to air a nine-film Hayao Miyazaki retrospective in January! Sweet! They're going to include rarer (at least in America) films of his like Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso (which are both quite good, btw), but I'm sure the better known classics like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away will be in there, too. I hope Cinematical is right and they will air them in original widescreen, and with subtitles, instead of dubbed. The dubbing is generally pretty high quality when it comes to Miyazaki's films, but I still prefer to hear the original Japanese language track.
- While we're on the subject of animation - poppy and I got out to see Tim Burton's Corpse Bride last night. Poppy was a little disappointed, as she found it predictable (which, admittedly, it most certainly is) and slightly dull, but I had a great time. I love the animation style (which takes so much time and requires so much attention to detail, that it allows for the inclusion of some wonderful little jokes and easter eggs; for instance, the piano that we see early in the film is a Harryhausen), the wordplay, the goofy-but-dark sense of humor, the characters, and yes, the story, even though I knew pretty much exactly what was going to happen every step of the way. I was surprised that this one lived up to the hype, as the ads made it look pretty lame to me.
- This has been a very concert-heavy month for me, and now I've got two more in the next two days. Tonight is Death Cab for Cutie, which is kind of a last minute thing I'm doing for Phillyist, and tomorrow night is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (which is also being covered by Phillyist, but not by me). Should be fun. Sadly, this will mean I'll be missing my second movie night in a row, which has rarely, if ever, happened in the history of movie night. But I'll definitely be back next week, as I don't want to lose my prized position in the movie-bringing cycle.
* Here I was going to link to the blog post where I listed my top ten films of all time, but looking back, it appears as if I never wrote such a post. Huh. Maybe I'll have to do that eventually... |
