Post-Holiday Catch-up (or is that catsup?) Volume 2: The Gaming Post
 by Fëanor

  • Finally, Family Media Guide has released its list of the 10 most ultra-violent videogames! Now we know what to run out and buy! But seriously, folks, I really like the tack Mr. Grant of Joystiq takes on this issue. Basically, if you're paying any attention at all, even a little, it's really easy to tell which games you shouldn't be letting your kids play. They have "Evil" and "Theft" and "War" and "Killer" in their titles, and there's a big "M" on the cover with text underneath explaining that this is NOT FOR KIDS. So stop blaming the industry, and stop trying to censor it! Thank you, and good night.

  • A custom-made Atari 2600 poker table. I'm not certain, but I suspect that this table is no longer meant to be used for playing poker at all. Which is okay with me.

  • On the eve of the next generation of gaming, Joystiq has posted a list of the top ten (or eleven) best overlooked games of this gaming generation. I am proud to say that I have not overlooked most of them; I've either heard of, played, or own pretty much every one of these titles. My favorite on the list is probably Killer 7, but I'm also a pretty big fan of Eternal Darkness and Ikaruga.

  • Damn it! This was totally my idea, and some punks stole it from me! What I'm talking about is integrating an exercise machine, like a treadmill or a stationary bike, into a video game system, such that the exercise machine basically becomes your controller. Still, even though I came up with the idea out of my own desire to play videogames (or at least do something distracting) while exercising, I'm not sure I'd actually be that interested in buying one. Both units mentioned in these posts are pretty expensive, and probably don't deliver that great a gaming or exercising experience. Still, I am curious...and Christmas is coming...hint, hint...

  • Speaking of which, Joystiq is offering us a gamer's holiday gift guide round-up today. Nudge, nudge. Not that I really need any more games right now - I've got about eight lying around unfinished, and at least one from last Christmas (I think) that hasn't even been installed yet - but still. Games!

  • The Nintendo Revolution may be super-backwards compatible, with a virtual machine for emulating previous consoles, and a character selection interface that will allow you to play as new, random, non-standard characters in old games. Seems like a good guess, anyway, based on this patent application (via Joystiq).

  • Maybe it's that whole hindsight is 20/20 thing, but seriously, did anybody besides the fools at Nokia think the N-Gage would actually do well and be popular? All the buzz about it was bad, from the very beginning. It was clunky, awkward, lame. And really, the chances of somebody being able to put together something that was both a great phone and a great gaming device are extremely slim. You're probably going to have to skimp on one half or the other, and end up with a crappy device. Besides the fact that I'm not even sure I want a phone/gaming device, just like I'm not sure I want the phone/video-watching devices they're throwing at us now. Companies are going to have to do better at creating the need and the desire for these things before trying to sell them to us.

  • Btw, have I mentioned that I am obsessed with Baten Kaitos? Because I am. I have a frigging Baten Kaitos hangover this morning from playing it too late last night.
