Voluminous Volumes, Volume Two
 by Fëanor

  • I couldn't help but post this one: a Japanese site which catalogues, in painstaking, graphical detail, all of the underwear worn by the characters in the game Dead or Alive 4. I am disturbed, and yet also...one might say...fascinated. (Via Joystiq)

  • It's wacky scientific inventions time again, children! This time the invention is an artificial gill system called "LikeAFish" that squeezes oxygen directly out of seawater, giving us a new way to breathe underwater besides those crummy old compressed air tanks. How does it work? Well, I'm glad you asked:
It utilises a high-speed centrifuge to lower the pressure of seawater in a small sealed chamber.

This allows the dissolved air to escape back into a gaseous state - much like the way carbon dioxide is liberated from a soft drink when you reduce the pressure on it by popping the bottle cap.

The air thus liberated is then transferred to an airbag for the diver to use.
Unfortunately, there are problems with the device; currently it's too bulky, won't work well in water that's polluted or lacking in oxygen, and runs on batteries that could leak and that eventually die. Apparently it's most likely potential use wouldn't be for a diver, but in a submarine or an underwater habitat. Still, pretty awesome idea. (Via Digg)

  • I always enjoy watching people make fun of Bill O'Reilly, and I suspect you folks do too, so check out this video of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann trashing him. Really Olbermann is apparently just defending himself against some crap Bill was flinging in his general direction on a previous episode of O'Reilly's show. Regardless...burn! (Via Digg)

  • And now let's take a moment to talk about Marilyn Manson. I already owned some of his music via the Lost Highway soundtrack, and I kind of enjoyed it, but I'd deliberately stayed away from purchasing any more because I hated his creepy, disgusting videos. Also, despite the fact that in interviews I'd always found him to be a very well-spoken individual with intelligent ideas, maybe I'd just heard to many bad things about the guy. Anyways, due to the generosity of a friend, and in a completely legal manner (ahem), I ended up in possession of some more of his music and - steeling myself for something truly offensive, frightening, and horrific - I started listening to it.

I was, not to put to fine a point on it, kind of disappointed. Not only is his music not really all that evil or offensive, most of it is actually kind of...bland. And even boring. It's just pop metal. I mean, I guess it's okay. But from all I'd heard about him and his music, I was expecting Satan himself to fly out of my headphones and attack me.

  • All of which is just a preface to this point: Manson is making a movie! And by "making," I mean, seriously, making it, practically single-handedly. Not only will he be directing it, he'll be co-writing the screenplay, scoring it, and starring in the main role. That main role being...Lewis Carroll. Yep, the movie is Phantasmagoria - The Visions of Lewis Carroll, and it's probably going to be another of those "twisted" takes on Wonderland that we've been seeing since - when was it, the early '90s? Maybe even before? Sigh. Ah, well, I guess it could be good. Supposedly Angelina Jolie is in talks to play the Red Queen, and I'd kind of like to see that.

  • I read a long time ago about them maybe making a movie based on the comic book superhero Iron Man. I got pretty excited about it, but then I seem to remember hearing something about the project being cancelled. However, the word is now that producer Don Murphy is still committed to making the movie (and really, why not, what with all the comic book movies being made and doing well these days). There's even a rumor that Alex Proyas, of Dark City and The Crow, might direct. Awesome.
