Targs and Torque, Volume One |
by Fëanor |
- You know those silly posters that were all the rage for about 15 minutes in the '90s? If you looked at them normally, they seemed like just a bunch of meaningless noise, but if you sort of crossed your eyes (not really, but you know what I mean, right?), you could make out a seemingly 3D image hidden in there. There was a funny scene about them in Mall Rats. Anywho, somebody's made an insane mod of Quake 2 that turns the whole game into one of those things. Like staring at a computer screen for hours wasn't bad enough for your eyes, now you'll have to do it cross-eyed!
- Katamari Damacy fans: ever wondered what the heck they're singing about in that fantastic, incredibly catchy theme song? Well, here's the translation. Turns out it's kind of...dirty. Oh my.
- Researchers have determined that an object (with the catchy name of 2003 UB313) about twice as far from the sun as Pluto, but still orbiting our star, is actually bigger than Pluto. So it's a tenth planet, right? Well, maybe not. Apparently, there's no agreed-upon, official definition of the word "planet." Some scientists argue that Pluto itself shouldn't even be classified as a planet; that it's instead just a Kuiper Belt Object. The International Astronomical Union is working on that planet definition (they're in charge of these sorts of things apparently), so we'll just have to wait until they decide. (Via Digg)
- I seem to remember seeing a list like this before, but this is not the same one: Top 10 weirdest USB devices ever. I posted about the USB air darts before, and how awesome I thought they were, and I think I've seen the USB self destruction button before, too (also awesome), but I've never seen the USB heated slippers or the USB heating gloves before, and they're just fantastic ideas it seems to me. Some of you may also appreciate number one, although it's not quite safe for work, as they say. (Via Digg)
- Three possible future Pixar projects: Ratatouille, about a rat who lives in a French restaurant (sounds promising!); a noirish film from Brad Bird, possibly based on the 1940s comic The Spirit (!!! I could probably think of a more awesome idea for a Pixar movie, but it would be hard); a 2D animated world music version of Fantasia by John Lasseter. Any single one of these sounds about ten times better than Pixar's current film, Cars. I'm still hoping for the best with that one, but it just looks so lame.
- Speaking of exciting upcoming computer-animated film projects, check out this article on Igor. It's about the haphazard adventures of the titular assistant to a mad scientist who dreams of winning the Evil Science Fair himself. Sounds like a great idea, and is apparently based on a short animated film with some great voice talent that I'm now curious to see.
