Happy Halloween |
by Fëanor |
Poppy and I are watching monster movies on Halloween. A great tradition. We caught Devil Bat earlier, a pretty hilarious movie featuring Bela Lugosi as a bitter, vengeful scientist who uses "shaving lotion" to mark people for a hideous death from his giant (rubber) pet bat. Then we caught the end of Frankenstein, and followed that up with Son of Frankenstein.
I tend to think of Bride of Frankenstein as the only truly great Frankenstein movie, but the sequel, Son of Frankenstein is also pretty fantastic. The cast is amazing, first off. It's the last movie with Karloff as the monster, and he gives the character all the pathos and power he always has. Basil Rathbone plays the title character, a prideful scientist and aristocrat with no idea what he's really getting into. Bela Lugosi turns in a truly amazing performance as the sinister, manipulative, and seriously creepy Ygor. A surprising stand-out is Lionel Atwill as Inspector Krogh, the one-armed, monocled character that Mel Brooks so successfully makes fun of in Young Frankenstein (it's actually amazing how many elements Brooks lifted whole from the old Frankenstein movies for his parody). Though the monocle and false arm could so easily be ridiculous, Atwill manages to make Krogh a believable, sympathetic, and even rather complex and interesting character.
The sets are almost their own, extra character, wonderfully surreal and nightmarish, and they remind me of nothing so much as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - everything is wild angles, yawning spaces, secret crevices, and impossibly tremendous doors. There's also a really great scene where Frankenstein's cute little boy tells a story about a giant he met, and you, his father, and the inspector slowly realize who he's really talking about, while the other characters just laugh at how imaginative the boy is. Rathbone's character finds himself at harder and harder pains to hide the truth about what he's doing and what's really going on around the house, to the point where it actually gets rather funny.
Anyway, check it out. It's worth a watch. |

Halloween |
by Fëanor |
I'm a little late with this, but I wanted to do a quick Halloween recap post. This Halloween was the first one we spent at home since we've been in this house. It was also my son's first ever Halloween. The three of us hung out and watched monster movies (Ghoulies and Ghoulies II are hilarious and fantastic, btw) while I manned the door. It was good times. We got a lot of trick-or-treaters - the most I've seen since I manned the door at my parents' house years and years ago. I was rather surprised. We almost used up every piece of candy in the three bags that I bought that morning.
I decided to give out the candy by just holding out the container and letting the kids take whatever they wanted, which was an interesting sociological experiment. Some kids would take one piece, then hesitate as if they wanted another but didn't feel right taking it, and then they'd walk away. In one case I encouraged the kid to just take another. Sometimes the parents were waiting on the sidewalk and would call out to their children to, "Just take one!" In one of these cases, the little girl in question took three pieces anyway. I thought this was hilarious, and totally did not tell on her.
I almost wish I'd had a good enough memory and enough patience to record exactly how much each kid took. I could have written a paper! As it is, I did make a go at recording what everyone was dressed as. The list is below, if you're interested, with genders included when I could remember. For some reason a lot of kids only went to the houses on the other side of the street and never made it over to ours, but I did see somebody over there dressed as an iPhone, which I thought was pretty great. Overall, a lot of classic costumes, which was kind of nice to see. The old traditions live on!
Great white shark (girl - this was one of my favorites)
Princess Leia (girl - she had fake buns on the sides of her head, but was also carrying a lightsaber, a non-canonical addition I enjoyed)
Robin Hood (girl)
Chef (boy)
Soccer Player (2 or 3 boys - I was pretty disappointed in these; it looked like they'd just put on the soccer uniforms they already owned)
Cowgirl (girl)
Bee (girl)
Sheep (girl)
Princess (girl)
Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz (girl)
Hamburglar (girl - this one pleased me. I didn't know kids today were even aware of the Hamburglar!)
Ghost (boy)
Pirate (boy)
Fireman (boy)
The Mario Brothers (boys)
Skeleton (boy)
Soldier (boy)
Wolverine (boy)
Woody from Toy Story (man)
Jesse from Toy Story (1 woman, 1 girl)
Sweet Tarts (baby - this was totally cute)
Caveman (boy)
Astronaut (boy)
Girl Scout (girl)
Zombie Cheerleader (girl)
The murderer from Scream (boy)
Scientist (boy)
Hobo (boy)
Darth Vader (boy - he wasn't wearing the mask, probably because it would have been a pain in the ass)
Anakin Skywalker, circa Episode II (boy - oddly he and Darth were traveling together. They were kind of like a before-and-after trick-or-treat team)
Harry Potter (boy)
Vampire
Dinosaur
Iron Man (boy)
Death (boy)
Wonder Woman (girl)
Batgirl (girl)
Supergirl (girl)
Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (girl) |

- You can buy actual versions of fake products from the virtual world of NCIS. The farting hippo is great, but outrageously expensive. What's really tempting is the Caf-Pow. (Via poppy)
- Craig Ferguson, the robot Geoff Petersen, Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman, puppets, and friends perform Modern English's "I Melt With You." Utterly ridiculous.
- Looks like we finally know why the honeybees are all dying off. So I guess sci-fi shows have to stop making up crazy reasons for that.
- Pride And Prejudice And Zombies just lost its director and its star, and Gravity is also without its main actress again. Poor movies.
- Looks like a pretty clever coffee cup holder.
- Firefly reunion on the set of Chuck! Aww. *sniff*
- Hilarious video imagines what it must be like to be Nicolas Cage's agent.
- A new, longer trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Wow! Apparently I don't remember that book at all.
- A schoolgirl wrote a letter to Johnny Depp asking for help with a mutiny, and he showed up at her school in full Jack Sparrow regalia. Pretty awesome.
- Need a quick, cheap Halloween costume? Super Punch is hooking you up with links to a ton of downloadable masks.
- Great Star Wars/Calvin and Hobbes mashup T-shirt. Speaking of Star Wars, here's the "Imperial Minigolf Final Exam."
- On November 11th, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., Nintendo will release a limited-edition Mario-red version of its Wii console in Japan. It will include an exclusive version of the game with altered graphics. Nintendo doesn't seem to have revealed what all the alterations will be, but click through for a screenshot featuring item blocks with the number 25 written on them.
- The title kind of says it all, but nevertheless, here is the (NSFW) trailer for Nude Nuns with Big Guns.
- Dude, this is amazing news: a new supergroup called Wild Flag has come to life, comprised of Mary Timony of Helium, Rebecca Cole of The Minders, and - most importantly as far as I'm concerned - Janet Weiss and Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney!! Sleater-Kinney is sort of back! Wild Flag's Facebook page is here. Woo hoo!
- Audio from a 1950s educational film strip about how to go out on a date is mashed up with footage from Star Wars in this brilliant and hilarious video.
- Velma's back - and she wants revenge!!
- Wow. I thought Secretariat looked like it might be an okay, if cliched, inspirational sports drama, but it sounds awful.

- This scary old bird had a 17-foot wingspan and big, bony teeth. Woah.
- A new trailer for the live-action Space Battleship Yamato. Holy crap does it look (and sound!) corny.
- A collection of insane video clips from ninja and kung fu movies. The most insane feature magic abilities only available to ninja women, and are NSFW.
- A cat version of Neil Gaiman, from a special episode of Arthur.
- Cool paintings of giant animals menacing cities.
- Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely are teaming up again, this time for Pax Americana, a 21st century Watchmen using the original Charlton Comics characters. Dude. I'm so there.
- Cat representations of Marvel Comics characters sort of blew up on the internet recently. I believe Super Punch managed to collect all of them into one post.
- I've seen examples of these tiny, real-world, sculpture installations before, and they're always fantastic and beautiful.
- A lovely, evocative, Halloween-inspired piece of art.
- A gallery of impressive, sci-fi LEGO creations. I've seen a lot of these before, but some are new, and all are cool.
- This fall's new crop of TV shows are given more accurate titles by the folks at College Humor. (Via)
- Because they're from Fringe, I feel honor-bound to link to these set pics. But a warning: they are really boring.
- I'm not a huge fan of Terry Pratchett, but I am impressed that he made his own sword out of meteorites.
- A not particularly helpful poster on the subject of removing face-huggers.
- This past weekend was Street Fighter weekend at Springfield Punx.
- A NSFW burlesque battle: Star Trek vs. Star Wars.

By the way, beware clicking through to io9 today. They have a really evil ad for the video game Fairytale Fights on the site that repeatedly opens a pop-up window, whether you have a pop-up blocker on or not. To stop the ad, right-click it, and uncheck "Play." I was actually vaguely interested in Fairytale Fights, but now I hate it on principle.

- These are awesome. I think Griffin needs one. (Via)
- Summer Glau's in a Western called The Legend of Hell's Gate: An American Conspiracy. It's about the adventures of three outlaws on the run in 1876. (Via)
- "In an effort to push consumers toward buying more movies, some major film studios are considering a new policy that would block DVDs from being offered for rental until several weeks after going on sale." D'oh. Considering how long it takes me to get it together and watch movies these days, this really has no effect on me, but I can see how it would be irksome to other film fans. It feels like another wrong-headed, desperate move by a crumbling empire that wants a changing world to go back to the way it used to be. (Via)
- Extremely cute knitted Cookie Monster, with cookies. (Via)
- Photos from the Lucasfilm Halloween party. (Via)
- 14 types of Twilight Zone endings. (Via Dan)
- Brutal Mario sounds like a fantastic, postmodern hack of Super Mario World. (Via)
- 4 reasons why zombies and superheroes don't mix.
- The first eight minutes of V. This reminds me a lot of the first episode of FlashForward - intercutting between different characters and situations while slowly building to the shocking, world-changing event. Fun bit: Jesus almost kills a guy! I also like the kid who trashes Independence Day. Overall pretty good.
- Amusing comic book/newspaper strip mashups.
- 5 US presidents best equipped to handle an alien invasion.
- Dreamworks is moving ahead with its plans for a live-action English-language version of Ghost in the Shell. It'll also be in 3D. Nice.
- 12 unfinished sci-fi novels the folks at io9 wish they could read.
- io9 gives Astro Boy a surprisingly positive review.
- io9 shows you how to update your boring old Halloween costumes.
- The crazy doubled-up Dollhouse schedule for December. I'm glad they're taking into account the fact that I'll be busy writing a novel in November and are simply not airing any episodes that month.
- Rob Zombie's Where the Wild Things Are. Yep, pretty much.
- Yet another casting rumor for Fury Road, the next Mad Max film: Sam Worthington.
- Baby wombat in a box!
- A video collecting all Windows start up and shut down noises from 3.1 to Vista.
- Dinosaur arm shirts! A related, and extremely important, scientific question is answered: no, a human could not beat a T. Rex in arm wrestling.
- Two German scientists say they've broken the speed of light by sending microwave photons instantaneously between a pair of prisms via a phenomenon called quantum tunneling, "which allows sub-atomic particles to break apparently unbreakable laws." I don't understand even one small part of that, but it sounds awesome.
- Video of an experiment demonstrating the principle behind superconducting trains. Cool!
- 13 kick-ass moments from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Some good picks, although I have to disagree with "Spike goes soul-searching" (I hated that Joss played the "vampire-with-a-soul" card a second time), "Buffy the Turok-Han Slayer" (one of the low points of the series, in my opinion, as Buffy defeats a vampire she previously could not defeat by... fighting it again. Uh... what?), and the destruction of Sunnydale (pretty much everything in that final episode is crap).
- Harlan Ellison won that lawsuit over that Star Trek episode. But the really important bit of information in this article is that there exists a talking Guardian of Forever Christmas ornament. WANT.
- One cool thing about those Microsoft stores: they "allow shoppers to order a Games for Windows title, leave their name with a customer service representative, then have the game, case, insert and other accouterments printed on the spot in under four minutes."
- Another item somebody could buy me for Christmas: the figurehead from Golden Voyage of Sinbad. C'mon, it's only $20,000! And move quick, because the auction'll be over in a few days. (Via)
- Cereal taxonomy. Also, a genetically engineered life form recovered from Howard Hughes' underground research vault. (Via)
- An interesting meta-list of the best comics of 2008. The list is on a blog with the horrific title "I Love Rob Liefeld," but thankfully the author's taste does not appear to have been taken into account when assembling the list. (Via)
- The third item at this link makes me feel better about America: Bill O'Reilly gets really terrible ratings.
- Here's someone dressed as a woman in a Roy Lichtenstein painting. Pretty brilliant. (Via)
- Fantastic animated Klingon propaganda video. Most people agree it's probably a viral ad for something - either a video game or a movie - but it's still awesome.
- Compelling evidence that Keanu Reeves is immortal.
- The Shining as a Yahoo! Travel hotel review.
- I know from painful experience that this web comic is absolutely true.
- Rumor has it that Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio might star in a remake of The Third Man. I'm pretty tolerant of remakes, to the extent that I'd actually be vaguely interested in this project, if it weren't for the involvement of Tobey Maguire. I can't imagine who he'd play in The Third Man.

- io9 says that Star Wars horror novel, Death Troopers, is good. However, the passage quoted here doesn't sound very good to me...
- 25 of the scariest science experiments ever conducted.

- Seriously cool clips from a fan-made Doctor Who anime. The third Doctor is hardcore.
- The Isaac Asimov estate has authorized a prequel trilogy set in the Robot/Foundation universe.

- io9 picks some B-string monsters that deserve a turn in the limelight.
- Tons of pics and a new trailer for The Wolfman. WOW. This looks GREAT!
- Crazy pumpkins with steampunk and Twitter (via) themes.
- The rumor flying around the internet lately is that George Lucas is planning a brand new Star Wars trilogy that would be filmed in 3D and directed by folks like Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola. I feel like this might have come out of somebody misunderstanding Lucas' plans to re-release the original trilogy in 3D, but hey, you never know. Despite everything that happened with the prequels, I have to admit, I'd totally go see new Star Wars movies - especially if they were directed and/or written by someone other than Lucas.
- Video of a dude launching an anvil with gunpowder. Awesome.

- The Windows 7 Whopper, with 7 beef patties (via). Yes, apparently this is a real thing. Good lord. While we're talking Windows 7, here's another amusing parody of that horrible Windows 7 party infomercial: Hosting Your Windows 7 Torrenting Party (via). I think my favorite part is the very last line of dialog. Other Windows 7 links include Wired's positive review of the OS and 7 things you should know about it from Gadget Lab. Also vaguely related: a look at those Microsoft retail stores. Turns out they're a lot like Apple's retail stores. That's just sad.

- Another fun Where the Wild Things Are contest: customize the fur-covered edition.
- A bunch of fun downloadable masks.
- Vintage Masters of the Universe paintings.
- Weird links from Warren Ellis: humans are still evolving, scientists know how body part regeneration works now, and Balloon Boy's father wanted TV fame before the world ends in 2012. Well I'm glad staring the apocalypse in the face really put his priorities in order!

- Speaking of The Dark Tower, supposedly Damon Lindelof has decided he doesn't want to be involved in making it into a movie because he loves it too much and he doesn't want to screw it up. Huh. Now I kind of want him to do it. (Via)

- Pretty excellent poster for Terminator 2.
- Alien cow abduction lamp.
- Over 40 (!!!) crazy sci-fi dream sequences.
- Remember that 3D-animated cartoon called ReBoot? It was a pretty clever and fun show, with a plot vaguely similar to Tron. Well, it looks like they're making a movie! Check out the teaser.
- ABC's going a little overboard with their promotion of V. Starting this Friday, "skywriters will create giant letter Vs multiple times a day above 26 well-known American landmarks."
- Cool new trailer for the Prisoner remake.
- Sounds like the rumors of De Niro and Jude Law showing up in Thor are probably just rumors. Sadness.
- The top five hunk of junk spaceships. Hmm. Not sure I'd classify the Borg cube as a hunk of junk, but still love the list.
- An "affordable" 3D copier! Put an object in and it will make a copy in plastic.
- Impressive cakes: Pac-Man and Darth Vader. I don't think I'd eat the Darth Vader one, though. Not appetizing at all.
- Robotic cheetah!!!
- Nikes made of junk.
- A short and stupidly funny clip from Star Wars with some new dialog added in.
- This interesting interview with director Richard Kelly about his upcoming film The Box made me want to see the movie more - and also less. Basing the main characters on his parents seems like a weird and pointless idea. But who knows, maybe it will work.
- Gigantic info dump on Epic Mickey. I don't have time to look at this, but thought somebody else might, so there you go. (Via)

- NASA is testing its first new rocket in 30 years.
- Posters for Legion.
- The guy who's been running FlashForward - Marc Guggenheim - has been replaced with co-creator and executive producer David Goyer. It might be a meaningless change, but then again it might be a response to a dip in the ratings.

- Hilarious image list: the world of tomorrow if the internet disappeared today. (Via)
- Ha ha ha! Burn. (Via)
- Amusing bathroom graffiti. (Via)
- Bing will supposedly start searching Twitter and Facebook status messages soon. How will it get access to Facebook status messages?? That seems like a bit of an invasion of privacy, unless it will somehow link in to your Facebook account and only search your friends' updates?
- M.C. Escher disses Mick Jagger. Pretty awesome. (Via)
- Bacon jam!!!

- See above for the full-length, Russian-language trailer for Timur Bekmambetov's flying car movie, Black Lightning. Seems like it could be fun. (Via)
- Wil Wheaton records an amusing exchange with a friend about the death of a D&D character.
- Seven ridiculous-ass sequels Hollywood almost foisted upon us. Pretty crazy stories of what could have been. (Via)
- Amazing photos of a hundred-year-old tunnel that lies more than 10 stories underground, behind Niagara Falls. (Via)
- Another leaked Dollhouse memo, this one by Topher. (Via)
- Truly awesome Han Solo vs. Captain Kirk knife fight shirt. WANT. (Via)
- Wonderful knitted Mario in Kuribo's shoe, plus a knitted Goomba. (Via)
- Hollywood studios are banning their stars from using Twitter because they think it's damaging the industry. This is the same shortsighted response to new technology that we've seen in the movie and music industries time and time again. Twitter is just another place you can generate publicity for your product! How is that bad?? Instead of sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling when something like this comes along, why don't you figure out how you can use it to your advantage? Idiots. (Via)
- Amusing poisonous gifts on sale at the Alternative Press Expo. (Via)
- Horrifying scarecrow Elmo. (Via)
- Some really wonderful street art. If you can't read the signs, they say "Sith Extinguisher," "Vampire Extinguisher," and "Fire Extinguisher." (Via Kaki)
- Speaking of great street art, check out these piano stairs and the amount of joy and wonder they generate. Makes me feel better about the world and humanity. (Via Todd)
- Very cute and geeky Super Mario World proposal. (Via)
- Sci-fi fun with Ikea brand names. (Via)
- Covering a Weird Al Yankovic parody seems like the height of postmodernism to me. Here's a bunch of MP3 downloads of people doing just that. (Via)
- Everybody's favorite fishy admiral goes for a pop art/hip-hop kind of vibe. (Via)
- Totally cute web comic.
- A team of engineers wants to enclose Houston inside a giant polymer dome to prevent heat and storms from destroying the city. Um... really??
- Marvel, you have enough comics with "Avengers" in the title, and way more than enough comics written by Christos Gage. Why are you putting Gage on a book called Avengers Academy, which will probably be as bad as Avengers: The Initiative? Please stop now.
- A preview of John Byrne's upcoming comic, Angel vs. Frankenstein. I generally like Byrne's work, and this preview is okay, but I don't know. This one sounds a little too silly even for me.
- Apparently there's an unaired, never-before-seen second pilot for Star Trek that's an extra long version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and it's going to be released on Blu-ray. One of these days I get the feeling I'm going to have to break down and get a Blu-ray player. In other Star Trek news, looks like the next movie has been pushed back from 2011 to 2012.
- A couple of Thor casting rumors: Robert DeNiro and Jude Law may have joined the cast in unspecified roles, and Dominic Cooper might play one of the Warriors Three.
- It looks like from these photos that the Cylons' "Plan" was to have a lot of sex. Which admittedly is a pretty good plan, but still.
- Fringe could be hurting in the ratings simply because there are so many other big, popular shows on Thursday night.
- Updates on the various X-movies: they want to reboot things for the Deadpool movie, and include the breaking the fourth wall stuff from the comics; the Magneto movie might not happen; and they'll use the recent, darker Harry Potter films as a model for the X-Men First Class franchise.
- Rumor had it that Jackie Earle Haley might play Sinestro in the Green Lantern film; he says no one's asked him, but that he's excited about the movie.
- A giant gallery of photos of old Halloween costumes (via). Speaking of which, here's a great Bender costume and a homemade exoskeleton costume.
- The director of the film adaptation of Ronin wants to do it in 3D. Oh my.
- Another Ghostbusters star talks about #3. Dan Aykroyd says they have a script but no greenlight.

- A pumpkin as a cheeseburger.
- Amazing homemade, full-body, leather lion armor.
- Someone spotted an interesting connection to the Bible in FlashForward.
- The 11 most disturbing "Tree House of Horror" segments from The Simpsons.
- Artist Paolo Rivera was left to his own devices when designing a journal about super-soldier experiments in the 1930s for The Marvels Project, so he slipped some Lovecraftian stuff in there. Awesome!
- R-rated movies as kids' books. (Via)
- Chris Kohler at Game|Life says Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is a great game, but it's not really an RPG.
- The bunnies do The Wolf Man. Fun enough, but not their best effort. (Via)
- 5 horror movies you can show your kids. Poltergeist? Really?! I don't know, man, that movie's pretty scary.
- Cinematical offers a list of five possible directors of the Avengers movie now that Favreau is officially out of the picture. PLEASE GOD NO NOT PAUL VERHOEVEN WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!!
- Look at all the new planets they found! And some are Earth-like!
- 10 things parents should know about Where the Wild Things Are. Really this could be boiled down to one item: your kids probably won't like it.
- A truly epic entry on Animals With Lightsabers.
- Cool robot posters.
- A video showing a proof of concept demonstration of playing D&D using Microsoft Surface. Pretty cool!
- Words to live by. (Via)
- Twitter hit 5 billion tweets. Wow. (Via)

Fëanor pours the entire internet into the Recyclotron, and only the best links come out the other end for you to enjoy.
- It's time for another episode of insanely great headlines: "Laser creates 'false memories' in fly brains." (Via)
- A preview of Dark Avengers #10. Looks very cool. Can't believe they did that to The Man-Thing, though! And in such a casual, back-handed way! (Via)
- The Dyson Air Multiplier sounds like a pretty cool next gen fan. (Via)
- I do not watch The Big Bang Theory, but I hear great things, and the Wil Wheaton episode looks like it will be fun. (Via)
- @Agent_M highlights some cool art.
- British scientists have developed a system that allows primitive brain-to-brain communication. It could be the future of the internet, allowing people to send thoughts, words, and images directly into the minds of others. Wow. (Via)
- A couple of interesting tidbits from @westerosorg on the Game of Thrones pilot: the castle from Monty Python and the Holy Grail will be a shooting location, and they'll also be using the still-standing sets from Kingdom of Heaven (via).
- In retrospect, I'm surprised it took so long for this particular animal-with-a-lightsaber to show up.
- A nuclear-powered robot ship could soon be sailing the great lakes of Titan. Awesome.
- You Know It's An Indie Horror Movie When...
- In this photo gallery, io9 takes a look through movies, TV shows, and comics to find out what your favorite sci-fi characters wore for Halloween.
- A gallery of Hammer pinup girls! Very nice.
- A bunch more clips, plus a behind-the-scenes video, from Fantastic Mr. Fox. It's still hard to tell yet if this is going to be a good movie. It certainly doesn't look as exciting as I'd hoped it would.
- Jason Schwartzman says he's seen 20 minutes of Scott Pilgrim and it's "unlike anything I've ever seen. I can't tell you much, but sort of beautiful; incredible. Good job Edgar Wright, good job." Also, some Veronica Mars alumni are being called in to work on a new CW show called Plymouth Rock about a bunch of young people on board a spaceship travelling to a distant planet which they hope to colonize, thus saving the human race. (Via)
- Skull cakes!
- Yowza. Check out the women of Stargate: Universe.
- Mental Floss takes a look at the creepy and twisted original versions of beloved fairy tales. (Via)

- One of the best scenes from Pulp Fiction, reenacted in Google Wave. (Via)
- Art through cooking. (Via)

- Great photo of a giant Russian WWII monument that has been converted into a cell phone tower.
- A look at the impressive cast of Robert Redford's historical drama about Lincoln's assassination, The Conspirator.
- Cinematical reviews Law Abiding Citizen, which I decided not to see at the Philadelphia Film Festival last night because of the ridiculous ticket price. Looks like I made the right decision; the movie sounds terrible.
- Could Nathan Fillion star in a remake of The Greatest American Hero?? I certainly hope so.
- It is disappointing, but not particularly surprising, that Terrence Malick's latest film will not be done on time. He's not exactly known for working quickly.
- Clever and fun kids' hoodies.
- Pretty great zombie reimagining of an Empire Strikes Back poster. (Via)
- Fascinating photo blog of previously undeveloped negatives discovered at an auction. It's great candid street photography. (Via)
- Dude teaches wolf puppy to howl. Cute! (Via)
- Crazy new espionage version of the classic board game Clue which features an optional text-messaging element. (Via Nick)
- ABC is apparently considering a for-real crossover between Desperate Housewives and Lost. Because those shows have so much in common.
- Superheroes in old war photographs.
- 11 great movie scenes involving exploding heads.
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii is "pretty difficult?" What? Why?! I need my games to be easy, dude. I'm getting old.
