- Piggie!
- I'm a big fan of early filmmaker Georges Méliès, especially his celebrated Le Voyage Dans La Lune. Well, that film has been restored with a new soundtrack by French pop duo Air! Here's a clip.
- I feel like I've seen this before... but anyway, it's still cool: 48 years of Doctor Who in about 10 minutes.
- You can download a free copy of the game they played in The Last Starfighter right here! It's a PC-only exe, by the way; sorry, Mac-users. I haven't played it yet, but I will! (Via)
- Well, Liam Neeson was at least on the set of The Dark Knight Rises. And he may have a cameo reprising his role as Ra's al Ghul. Which would be AWESOME.
- You can now purchase this great Hellboy/Peanuts mashup.
- I enjoy this Adopt a Dire Wolf T-shirt. It supports a good cause!
- Via Warren Ellis, "Indonesian man arrested for kicking woman he thought was a ghost." And really, from the way he describes it, I might have kicked her, too. But more likely I probably would have just run screaming.

- Evan Shaner wishes a happy birthday to Comic Twart by posting a representative image for every theme chosen in the blog's first year.
- Dan Hipp illustrates one of my favorite moments from Return of the Jedi.
- Somebody made a board game version of a tower defense game. Sounds like it's pretty cool, too.
- Baby-sized TARDIS! I feel like Griffin should have one of these.
- I've been reading a collection of old Russian folk tales, so it was interesting to find this post about an upcoming novel that re-envisions the stories of old Russian folk figures. You can read an excerpt here. It takes the elements of Russian folk tales - the repetitions (often in threes), the moments of sudden and inexplicable magic - and analyzes and re-imagines them in the context of communism and socialism. It's absolutely fantastic.
- Now that a mad scientist is cloning a woolly mammoth, io9 has suggestions for some other extinct animals we might want to bring back.
- Fringe fans just have to love this "Walter is my homeboy" T-shirt. Because you know what? Walter is my homeboy.
- Good news, everyone! NBC has ordered a pilot for Ron Moore's police show set in a world ruled by magic - Precinct 17.
- Sounds like Marvel is once again making an attempt to turn Black Panther into a movie.
- The bikini- and carnage-filled trailer for the DVD/blu-ray release of the modern classic, Sharktopus, complete with catchy beach rock theme song.
- As the entire world knows by now, Anne Hathaway will be Catwoman and Tom Hardy will be Bane in the next Batman movie. It took me a while to mull this news over. I haven't seen Anne Hathaway in much. She seems a bit goody-goody to play Catwoman, but hey, she's an actress! She should be able to pretend to not be goody-goody, the way actresses do. Tom Hardy seems a bit of an odd choice, too, for a monstrous, wrestler-type villain, but Tom Hardy is awesome, and also pretty damn ripped, so I think he can pull it off. Plus, Christopher Nolan's instincts are pretty damn good as far as these things are concerned (anybody remember Heath Ledger, the best Joker ever?), so I'm cautiously optimistic.
- The 1600th episode of Laugh-Out-Loud Cats is pretty mind-blowing, you guys.
- Dark Horse/Mike Mignola need to hire Enrique Alcatena to draw a Hellboy book RIGHT NOW. I'm just saying. This guy is GOOD.
- Someone has invented a game that's a combination of bowling and billiards. That's actually kind of vaguely brilliant.
- Here's a video of someone throwing boiling water into the air somewhere where it's so cold that the water instantly evaporates (or turns to snow, or something - I don't know, I was an English major, not a science... guy).
- You can simulate a fake incoming call with Samsung phones? Hey, I have a Samsung phone!
- A guy attached a tiny video camera to some arrows and shot them with his bow! Nice!
- More and better images from the X-Men: First Class movie.
- Blastr has compiled an impressive list of 83 differences between Fringe's alternate universe and ours.
- Muppets inserted into 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- Cinematical gives us a rundown of at least 13 movies that you can expect to see ads for during the Super Bowl.
- It sounds like Johnny Depp may be taking Robert Downey Jr.'s place in Sam Raimi's Wizard of Oz movie.
- Even for a non-American Idol fan like myself, this recap of the latest American Idol is truly entertaining. I love the quick, spot-on critique of those horrible Bing ads, too.
- Btw, don't worry, George Lucas wasn't really serious about that thing about the world ending in 2012. He claims. He probably just wants to make sure no one goes looking for his secret escape spaceship.

A New Year, a Fresh New Recyclotron |
by Fëanor |
Fëanor pours the entire internet into the Recyclotron, and only the best links come out the other end for you to enjoy.
- You can listen to The Decemberists' new album, The King Is Dead, in its entirety on NPR. As the folks in the band have said in interviews, this album is a departure for them - simpler, more straightforward; not an epic concept album, just a collection of songs. As a result, I'm not as excited about it as I was about their more recent releases, but it's still good music.
- Yay! A hilarious new edition of Hark! A Vagrant!
- A visual history of Daft Punk's costumes. Daft Punk's cameo in Tron Legacy was one of my favorite scenes.
- You may have heard Pixar is doing a short film set in the Toy Story universe, centering on Barbie and Ken. The plot has been revealed.
- Watch polar bears attack and destroy the high tech spy cameras sent to film them.
- A 1991 Mexican Alka-Seltzer commercial directed by Guillermo Del Toro - it features a werewolf, naturally.
- Neil Gaiman offers a very fine New Year's benediction.
- Awesome Christmas card by Nick Edwards, featuring Santa riding a dinosaur and firing a laser cannon.
- Pac-Man's cameo in Tron, revealed!
- Nice custom Hellboy figure.
- Cult classic movies turned into comic books. I particularly like Legend #18, which features the return of Darkness, and The Other Adventures of the Dread Pirate Roberts #74. (Via)
- If you're going to Germany any time soon (or you live there), beware the radioactive wild boars!!
- I've been looking forward to seeing the entries in Super Punch's latest monthly art contest - the one centering on Stanley Kubrick's Lord of the Rings film adaptation, starring the Beatles - and now they've finally been revealed! As it happens, the site's erstwhile creator, Mr. Struan, is having a hard time picking a winner, and is asking for your help on deciding, so head on over and tell him your favorite.
- Download Squad picks its 12 favorite time-wasters of 2010. Might have to waste some time with these soon...
- Sad news: great character actor Pete Postlethwaite has died.
- Going up for auction on January 13th: the Playboy pinup that was smuggled aboard Apollo 12.
- Cute 8-bit version of Tron Legacy, based on Mega Man sprites, complete with an 8-bit version of Daft Punk's "Derezzed."

- A funny, sad, and insightful analysis of how Star Wars fans feel about George Lucas.
- Another fun entry in HBO's series of videos on the making of Game of Thrones. This one focuses on designing and fitting the armor. Yay, armor!
- Dan Hipp draws a famous scene from The Empire Strikes Back.
- With the assumption that Fringe's new Friday night time slot could mean the show's doom, io9 gives us five things we can do to save Fringe right now.
- Salon presents a slideshow of photos from locations where famous sci-fi movies were filmed. (Via)
- WOW. When I first read about Hanna, I assumed it would be just another girl assassin movie. But this thing looks AMAZING.
- More year-end round-up stories: the worst new TV series of 2010, 2010's worst puns in movie ad quotes, and the cheapest toy roundup: all-dollar-store edition (which is actually just kind of depressing).
- Some amusing sketches by cartoonist Kelly Tindall, including Gambit playing poker with dogs, and Dazzler ruining a funeral. (Via)
- I posted this web comic to Twitter the other day, but it's so amazing I thought I'd repost it here. (Via)
- Graham Annable has been making doodles based on requests made to him on Twitter. Here's the Flickr set. Some wonderfully random concepts wonderfully executed. (Via)
- A Krampus/Claus Christmas card, and Hellboy as Santa. (Via)
- A bunch of fun Disney/Tron mashups.
- An animated video for Sam Prekop's latest single, "The Silhouettes." The music is a bit more repetitive and electronica-oriented than I usually like, but it's okay.
- Chris Sims will astound, terrify, and entertain you with his list of the five most insane Christmas comics of all time.

Fëanor pours the entire internet into the Recyclotron, and only the best links come out the other end for you to enjoy.
- The latest Comics Alliance link roundup includes a video where Mike Mignola tells stories about his career, and this link listing five made up sci-fi children's books.
- Farel Dalrymple draws Batman, and Dan Hipp draws Inception and the Justice League!
- So J.J. Abrams is doing another TV series about time traveling and a mysterious island starring Jorge Garcia. Sigh. It's called Alcatraz, and Sam Neill just joined the cast.
- Cool shirt on Threadless: Technicolour Rex. (Via)
- Apparently there is a brand of rum called Kraken? Anyway, the company has some cool accessories for sale on its online store. Although oddly, no rum. (Via)
- Evan Shaner draws Velma! Clearly I need to subscribe to his blog. (Via)
- In case you somehow missed hearing about this somewhere else, Gawker got itself hacked. If you have a commenting profile on one of its sites, you probably want to go in and change your password.
- A new trailer for Thor is online. It has good bits and bad bits. Most of the bad bits happen when people say things. Which doesn't bode well, as I imagine there will be a good deal of talking in the movie. I'm still hoping it will somehow be an entertaining film, however.
- Gwyneth Paltrow says Pepper Potts will not appear in The Avengers. Can't quite work out whether I'm sad about that or not.
- The Ultimate New Frontier Collector's Set is up for bid on eBay. And hey, Christmas is coming up soon now! Hint hint. (Via)
- This is a clever idea: The Boardgame Remix Kit. Interesting new rules for those old family boardgames everybody already owns. (Via)
- Dinosaur versions of various superheroes.

- Craig Ferguson's song-and-dance explanation of Doctor Who for clueless Americans.
- Related item: a TARDIS bed!
- io9 has posted a gift guide - specifically for lightsabers.
- A look at the imaginative art of Yoko Furusho.
- Conan's version of the Spider-Man musical (FYI, the video player at that link doesn't load properly in Chrome, so don't bother trying to watch it in that browser), and a horrifying look at what a Hulk musical might be like.
- Mondo is starting off its Director's Series of posters by focusing on the films of Guillermo Del Toro. Underwire has many images of the Blade II poster, and one of the Hellboy II poster. What I'd really like to see is the Pan's Labyrinth poster.
- That space Nazi movie, Iron Sky, is finally actually going into production, and Underwire has a ton of pics.
- A set of 20 cards featuring Steampunk Victorian versions of some familiar heroes. (Via)
- Another fun art challenge on Whitechapel: the poster for a Justice League film, if it were made in 1977 by Malcolm McLaren (who managed the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls, among other things). Annie Wu's entry is clearly the best so far, but this one and this one are also fun.
- More fun reviews of old Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes by Zack Handlen at Onion A.V. Club. I just saw "Reunion" again recently myself and enjoyed it, even if Duras turns out to be just about the clumsiest assassin of all time. I hugely agree with Handlen on this aside from his review: "I wouldn't want to lose a minute of the Ritual of Poking The Dead Guy With The Cattle Prod. That was awesome."

- ABOVE IS NEW HARRY POTTER TRAILER OH MY GOD IT LOOKS SO GOOD THE END. (Via)
- Heh. I'd watch Star Wars vs. Star Trek.
- The Wachowskis' sci-fi film about the Iraq War, Cobalt Neutral 9, sounds totally insane.
- A TV series spin-off of Goodfellas could be on the way, with the original screenwriter on board to write the pilot. (Via)
- I love the Hellboy/Peanuts mashup.
- This list of the 15 best miniature golf courses includes video of a couple of particularly insane holes.
- Two "micro-episodes" (WTF are those??) of the upcoming animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Things to like about the Iron Man episode: it features a giant tentacled HYDRA robot! Also Tony has a great big Jackson Pollock which moves aside to reveal a great big TV screen. And I like how Tony's Iron Man undershirt looks like it's straight out of Tron. As for the Hulk short, I enjoy that the diner is called Vital Sign. The way they animate Bruce's transformation is cool, too.
- Heh. These superhero/villain hoodies are pretty clever.
- Check out a bunch of trailers for a Bollywood movie called Robot. It looks insane!
- A trailer for the All-Star Superman animated movie. Hard to tell from this if they'll be able to capture what makes the source material so transcendent and revelatory, but we'll see.
- Some art created for George R.R. Martin's short story "And Seven Times Never Kill Man" (which is an okay story; very eerie) is oddly similar to an early concept sketch of Wookiees by Ralph McQuarrie. Did GRRM influence Star Wars?!
- An alternate opening of Iron Man 2. I haven't seen the actual opening of Iron Man 2 yet, but I rather enjoy this version.
- Cool painting.
- Underwire has a preview of Zack Whedon's Terminator 1984, a Dark Horse comic I've been looking forward to.
- How Empire Strikes Back should have ended. Heh.
- Guillermo del Toro wrote a role for Ron Perlman into his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. Perlman, if he accepts the part (and he'd better!!), would play the guy in the expedition that cares for the dogs and the sleds. Del Toro describes him this way: "He's sort of a pragmatic guy, doesn't care about science or the mythology or the cosmology. He just is a hard-boiled Nordic man." Fun!
- Supposedly this is Christopher Nolan's short list for directors of the next Superman movie. Of these guys, my vote is for Duncan Jones.
- Another set pic from Captain America features a bad-ass lady shooting at some gangsters. Could it be Peggy Carter, Cap's girlfriend?
- The first official photo from Scream 4. It features the star and the killer, and yet still manages to be kind of boring. Ah, well.
- Star Wars/Pulp Fiction mashups.
- If Link had an iPhone, it would be a lot easier to navigate Hyrule.
- Mike Ditka as a bear.
- Pac-Man Battle Royale is a new multi-player version of the game where the Pac-Men can eat each other. Good lord!
- A Michael Jackson-themed massively multiplayer game? That's terrifying.

The Take |
by Fëanor |
Fëanor's (semi-)weekly comic book review post.
This post covers new releases from the week of 9/1. Beware spoilers!
New releases
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight #36
Another jump back in time, and another attempt to explain Angel's recent actions. This time they do a pretty decent job. We also get to see how Angel and Spike dropped in from the IDW comic book universe. It was a pretty sudden and violent process! Next the book sets up the upcoming storyline - which will apparently involve returning to Sunnydale, fighting the Master again (he's still around??), and digging up something called the Seed of Wonder. Then it threatens us with a future storyline involving the universe that Buffy and Angel created and then abandoned when they had ultra-sex.
Meeeeh. I just don't know about Buffy anymore. I'm still annoyed by the resolution of the previous storyline, despite their attempts to explain it away. I'll probably stick around for now, though, if only to see what this Seed of Wonder is all about.
Thumbs Sideways
Hellboy: The Storm #3
Hellboy once again rejects his destiny - he's good at that! He gives up his army and his sword. I very much like the parallel to Arthurian mythology here, where Hellboy asks his loyal retainer to throw his sword into a pond or a river, because "that seems like the thing to do." She doesn't want to at first, but finally agrees. Then there's the image of the grail on the inn's sign post. Interestingly, Hellboy says after this is all over, he wants to go back to the Bureau, and also live in America with his new girlfriend. Cool! But Hellboy's got a lot of hard work ahead of him before that can happen. He has an interesting confrontation with the guy I take to be Merlin, who again offers him the army of Hell to command - but Hellboy made his choice as far as that's concerned a long time ago. Then Baba Yaga shows up again to make him a different offer: if she can have one of his eyes, she can get him past Nimue's army so he can face her one on one. But deals with Baba Yaga are never a good idea, and this one may very well have brought about Nimue's final and most terrible transformation - the one the beast warned Hellboy about an issue or two ago. By the end of this comic, it looks like she has become - against her will, even - what Hellboy refused to be. The seven Old Ones have awoken again! That is not good news.
This has been a fantastic series, and I'm excited and a little terrified to see what comes next.
Thumbs Up
Incorruptible #9
We learn more details about Alana Patel's past, and about her connection to Max Damage. But it turns out she might be more pissed at Jailbait than at Max. Which is bad, because the new, vulnerable Jailbait just landed right in front of her. Meanwhile, it looks like the white supremacists want revenge on Max in a big way. I know I keep saying this every month, but I'm really disappointed in this book anymore. The art is poor and inappropriate, and the writing is pretty weak. It's still a must-buy in my head, but I don't know how much longer that's going to be true if it keeps on this way. Especially if the next week it comes out, there are five other books I'd rather read.
Thumbs Sideways
Wolverine #1
Jason Aaron has a new ongoing Wolverine title! Which is something I would have been way more excited about back before I read his other Wolverine title and couldn't get into it at all. I decided to give this new one a try anyway, but sadly I don't think I'm going to be able to get into it, either. I did learn a couple of interesting things in this issue: Wolverine has a love interest, and she appears to be that reporter from the other Wolverine title Aaron was writing. Also, Mystique is alive again (not that I ever really expected her latest death to stick), and despite the way Wolverine treated her last time I read about them hanging out together, she's now helping him by saving his girlfriend. Huh. I would not have expected that. Anyway, the story involves some kind of evil presence inhabiting Wolverine's body and wandering about doing mischief on Earth while his soul is tortured in Hell. I guess it's kind of a vaguely intriguing premise? But mostly I find it boring and off-putting. It seems like all the comic book heroes are going to hell lately. Really, the whole book is cliches. Wolverine's life is finally settling down, and he's got a girlfriend, and things are looking up, so of course everything's going to go horribly wrong and a gang of killers is going to try to murder his girlfriend. The problem is, it's hard to care about Wolverine, because c'mon, he'll be fine, and it's even harder to care about his girlfriend, because she's just the generic comic book reporter girlfriend and I don't care about her at all. Maybe Aaron has more exciting things planned down the line in future issues, but I'm just not sure I'm willing to hang in there and find out.
Thumbs Sideways
X-Men: Smoke and Blood - Curse of the Mutants #1
You know what nobody's telling stories about lately? Vampires! Thank goodness Marvel is here to remedy that! Ha ha ha- oh, screw it. Anyway, apparently the latest X-Drama revolves around those mystical blood-sucking entities that one hears about so rarely these days, and this awkwardly titled one-shot is writer Simon Spurrier's contribution to the story. I follow Spurrier on Twitter (@sispurrier), and I've enjoyed his work in the past, so I thought I'd pick it up. The book is... okay. The vampire portrayed here is actually more like a Xenomorph from the Alien movies than your traditional be-caped seducer, and the story proceeds like one of those movies, with a small group of people trapped in a small area with the monster, being killed off one by one in true sci-fi/horror thriller fashion, despite all their technology. I'm not sure I quite follow the solution to the mystery of how the vampire works (when Emma asked, "What the $&#% just happened?" near the end, I sympathized with her a great deal), but that's okay. The dialog is clever to the point of sometimes being too clever - it occasionally totters towards feeling contrived and over-composed. But it's also legitimately funny and smart a reasonable portion of the time. Like I said, the book is okay.

The Take |
by Fëanor |
Fëanor's (semi-)weekly comic book review post.
This post covers new releases from the weeks of 8/4 and 8/11. Beware spoilers!
New releases
B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth - New World #1
Apparently this and the next handful of B.P.R.D. story arcs are all going to be published under the "Hell on Earth" subtitle, which bugs me. Too many subtitles! I have to use the colon, and then the dash to write it all out! Ah, well. In this issue we learn that B.P.R.D. is dealing with dead-ends, wild goose chases, employee conflicts, backlash from the public, and a bunch of mysterious disappearances. I'm still upset about Devon's friction with Abe. The disappearances are unsettling, as well, as is Johann's obsession with getting back the physical body he lost. Where is it all leading?? We can only wait and see.
Thumbs Up
Captain America #607 & #608
Ouch. The new Zemo is hitting Bucky where it hurts now, drugging him to make him look bad, and then dragging the Winter Soldier out into the light. Harsh. I'm curious to see how Bucky fights back. Meanwhile, the Nomad backup stories are actually getting slightly less sucky, which is nice.
Thumbs Up
Fringe: Tales from the Fringe #2
I almost didn't buy another issue of this anthology comic, as the previous issue was rather mediocre, but the first, full-page panel in this book features Broyles crumbling into dust, and that was just too interesting for me to pass up. (It's just a dream, of course, but still.) The first story jumps back in time to fill in some of the blanks surrounding the case that finally killed Broyles' marriage. We also get to meet Broyles' old partner and get a look at what happened to her. It's not pretty! The second story is a pretty standard Twilight Zone-style affair about a guy who goes in a room he's told not to go in, sees something he should never have seen, and creates a terrible future in his attempts to prevent it. Meh.
Thumbs Sideways
Hellboy: The Storm #2
Oh hey! That old guy from the end of the last issue was Merlin! Like, Merlin Merlin! He tells the story of Nimue - the new Queen of Witches - and reveals the horrible origin of the beast Hellboy's in the middle of fighting. He also shows that little pig guy the enormity of the betrayal he's performed, leveling a terrible curse against him in the process. It's intense. Plus, the vision of apocalypse Merlin reveals is very similar to the one we've been seeing in B.P.R.D., which is neat. I love the eerie moment in the church when the ghost comes to visit the priest. And the way Hellboy beats the monster is so bad-ass - very similar to the end of the legendary fight between Arthur and his son, Mordred. Nimue's champion hints at some terrible truth about her that's still hidden. Dropping the sword in the ground seems to call up an inn for them to rest in, which also becomes a meeting place for Hellboy's army. He gets a glimpse of what's happening to B.P.R.D. on the TV, and has a really moving flashback to his childhood. "I'm not a monster, am I?" Fantastic, fantastic issue, summing up what's come before and setting up what's to come, with some great character development. And Duncan Fegredo's art is just amazing, especially paired with Dave Stewart's usual stunning colors. Damn, I love Hellboy!
Thumbs Up
Irredeemable #16
This issue is sort of a moment of calm amidst the storm, as our characters recover from the events of the last story arc and prepare themselves for what's coming next. Gilgamos' story is particularly dark and brutal. I enjoy Qubit's water-teleporting umbrella. And it's cool to discover that Kaidan might be a lot more powerful than she suspected. Meanwhile, it looks like Modeus may be getting ready to take the next step in his plan, and I'm very curious to see what it is.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #3
Just as the previous issue revealed Da Vinci to be the head of the faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. that believes the world can be saved, this issue reveals Isaac Newton to be the head of the opposing faction. He is one twisted dude! The way he infiltrates the Deviants, steals their knowledge, and destroys them - man! I love the machine built to defeat Galactus, that works by sacrificing men. "There is nothing that can't be done. There is simply a price to be paid." Newton takes Galileo's teachings, adds to them, and twists them into something evil. Galileo says, "Some men call me master... you will call me brother." Later Newton repeats this and reverses it: "Some men call me brother... you will call me master." In the back of the book is some correspondence from the secret Vatican archives revealing that the adoption of the Gregorian calendar was part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plan to erase from history the defeat of Galactus. Awesome! This comic is so brilliant and creative and amazing.

Supergod #4
The madness continues, as our British scientist describes a super God fight, the destruction of the moon, and people being used as the building blocks of a strange structure. Good old Warren Ellis. I'm both curious and terrified to see how this all concludes in the next issue.

Thor: The Might Avenger #3
I like the way this comic catches you up on previous events by just slapping together a bunch of old panels with big "PREVIOUSLY..." and "MEANWHILE..." narration boxes on them. Very effective and comic booky! Plus the book really hits its stride in this issue by pulling great characters like Henry Pym, Janet van Dyne, and Loki into the story. Jane and Thor are cute together, and the story of Pym's relationship with Lew Stephens is sweet. The whole enterprise has a very satisfying, old school vibe to it. Well done!

Unwritten #16
Time for the big climactic showdown! Tommy's Dad explains things! (Some things. Kind of.) The book is released! (Only it's not the book we thought.) People die! (A good guy who wasn't so good, and the very worst bad guy of them all.) Lizzie goes home! (Except it turns out you really can't go home again, at least not once you've been written out of your own story.) Also, magic! It is great, great stuff. Incredibly thrilling, and satisfying enough, even though it doesn't actually answer all our questions or tie up all the loose ends. Where to next? I'll be there to find out.
