(Last updated on Monday, February 6, 2017 03:34 PM) | I Wrote a Book! |
by Fëanor |
Well, I wrote the book a while ago. And then my brother drew and colored pictures to go with. And then he made a couple of physical copies just for us. But now! You can go and buy it yourself! On Amazon! It's only an eBook for now, but we're going to look into making it possible to buy a physical, printed copy, too. Anyway, here it is!
Ballyhoo, and Mom's Other Tigers
It's a children's book, in verse, about tigers, sort of. If you do purchase it, and like it, please leave a review on Amazon! I understand good reviews are a great way to help us generate further interest and more sales. Thanks much!
UPDATE: And now it's also available in paperback! |

- Gifs from Bonniegrrl: two sets of Empire Strikes Back gifs, Metropolis, The Young Ones, Sir Giles of Buffy, and... yeah, I don't know what's going on here.
- Speaking of gifs, here are some unspeakably cute ones of a wombat and a cat and his boy.
- A tiny Santa hedgehog. Eeee!
- Awesome photo of awesome dogs.
- I deeply love this hateful cat.
- Scientists are working on a new RNA-based vaccine that could wipe out the flu forever. Amazing stuff!
- The Max Fleischer Superman cartoons are pretty fantastic, and you can now watch them all on YouTube, legally and everything!
- More cuteness for you, straight from the source (Cute Overload).
- Partly as research for my novel, and partly just because I like them, I've been reading tons of fairy tales and folk tales lately. So I was kind of excited to see that a big-screen, Hollywood adaptation of Jack the Giant Slayer was in the works. But I should have figured that in the process of creating such a thing, they would have added all the typical big-screen, Hollywood trappings to the story. Corny catch-phrases, lame love story, overwhelmingly huge action set pieces, bombastic rhyming prophecies, tons of special effects. Oy. This trailer is just gross.
- Homemade cardboard Star Destroyer!
- I particularly love the second piece in this Super Punch art roundup.
- I really love the sweet and funny Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown, so it's pretty cool that he's doing a sequel called Vader's Little Princess. There are even holiday-themed downloads!
- I never got into Lemony Snicket, but I've heard great things, and we do have a book we really like written and illustrated by Jon Klassen, so I'm curious about this book that the two of them are collaborating on, The Dark.
- I'm fascinated by devices like this for some reason: a lamp that tells you the weather by recreating it inside your house. (No, it will not actually make it rain.)
- Andrew W.K. has been named the U.S. cultural ambassador to Bahrain. FYI. So they will be partying hard there soon, I assume. UPDATE: Somebody somewhere apparently realized this was kind of a crazy idea and cancelled the whole thing. The world is a sadder place now.
- Ironically, the most frustrating thing about watching this collection of the craziest fake ads from movies is all the real ads stuck in between.
- Holy crap, you guys. NASA is working on a faster-than-light warp drive.
- How to make a fairy room in your house. Awesome idea.

- I enjoy my friend's Tumblr and its many gifs. Celebrating Ian McKellen, cat being funny, one of the greatest scenes from Clue, a hedgehog, George R.R. Martin being a dick, a statement of principles, and the cutest thing ever.
- I also am a big fan of io9. They've got clips from the special features on the Princess Bride 25th Anniversary release, an essay on the good and bad and in between of time travel stories; and a weird set photo from what will no doubt be a very weird movie, Darren Aronofsky's Noah.
- I guess the all-woman Expendables is going to be a real thing, because Gina Carano just got cast in the lead role.
- A wonderful new Wondermark.
- Twitter repostings! The toaster that burns the weather into your bread (conceptual only, sadly), and clips of David Lynch's guest appearance on Louie.

- New Hark! A Vagrant!
- A panda enters.
- There a whole lot of blogs involving artists redrawing/reimagining other art, but... well, here's another! It's a series of artists redoing all the character portraits from The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe.
- One of my favorite artist/bloggers, Noelle Stevenson, has launched her fantasy web comic Nimona. It's pretty good!
- The very last Life In Hell strip was recently printed. Never really got into this strip too much, but definitely feels like the end of an era.
- This guy is redoing Blade Runner as a series of watercolor paintings, which is insane.
- A teaser trailer for the Monsters Inc. prequel, Monsters University. Looks like fun!
- A few drinks while you're pregnant is not going to permanently damage your baby. There's science now to back this up. So let's all calm down just a little bit.
- Here's a trailer for a movie called Prototype, which is about an experimental robot going rogue. Or a human being who turns into a robot? Or something? Looks neat.
- Apparently the best predictor of how well a movie will do at the box office is online buzz.
- There's going to be a Sesame Street movie! Who knows how this will turn out, but I'm cautiously optimistic.
- Apparently Hobotopia did a series of Lord of the Rings-related comics. Nice! The 2000th entry of that strip is coming up, which should be fun.
- Hey, Sin Titulo started updating again.
- The ISS re-cut The Avengers.
- A chart explaining the evolution of the alien as described in Prometheus. (Spoiler alert!)
- Crazy video of a dude killing bosses in Diablo III in ridiculously short amounts of time. Like, he polishes off the Skeleton King in less than a second. (Via)

- Dude, my friends wrote a book! You can buy it! You should buy it. Buy it now!
- One of my favorite of the recent posts on Reproductive Ryan Gosling. My very own poppy is a co-founder and contributor!
- Awww, look at the tiny Avengers! So tiny!
- A little goat! Hopping! On a bed!
- I love Marion, and I love Raiders of the Lost Ark, but... yeah. Baskets. *facepalm*
- Female Holmes and Watson.
- Blue And Bluer celebrates one of the great film classics, Grosse Pointe Blank.
- Some Game of Thrones humor.
- A little Daily Show for you.
- Heh. Poor Michelle.
- SANDWICH POLICE. That is all.
- Now here's something you can base a system of government on!
- Can't remember if I posted this before, but it's worth a repost if I didn't: Elmo and Grover as Street Fighters.
- An old script for an episode of the original Star Trek that was never filmed is going to get turned into a webisode by the New Voyages crew. Nice!
- There are birthday cake Oreos? Where can I get them?!
- Oh hey, it's that time of year again! March M.O.D.O.K. Madness!
- I kind of want this bird nest bed.
- Some pics from, and a new trailer for, Men in Black 3. I want to like this, because the original Men in Black is such a great movie, but... I just don't know.
- Another movie I want to like is John Carter. You can watch ten minutes of it right here. I was hoping to be really impressed by this, but despite some clever moments (and an inspired choice of when to cut short the clip), I could take or leave this movie.
- Some really cool props from Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor are up for auction.
- Cool Star Wars crayons.
- Cute Saruman figurine. All right, maybe cute isn't the right word, but whatever, I like it, is the point.
- Wow. Mike Mignola did a book cover for Heart of Darkness. Two great tastes that taste great together!
- I've mostly soured on the whole Simpson-izing thing, but these Simpsons versions of Scooby and Shaggy are fun.
- Look out! Tiger Batman!

(Last updated on Sunday, March 4, 2012 01:44 PM) | Floyd |
by Fëanor |
True story: when I pulled up to the kennel where I was going to hand over Floyd to his new owners, Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train" came on the radio. You know, the one with the video about lost children? I was like, you've gotta be kidding me.
As you may remember from previous posts, for a long time now (wow, those posts are from over three years ago!) we've had trouble with our greyhound Floyd peeing in the house. Well, lately he's just been getting worse and worse. Every day, multiple times a day, we'd come into his room and find puddles, or - even better! - piles, of waste. He even took to laying in his pee and... well, I won't go into further detail, but suffice it to say, Floyd and his room were both continually a smelly mess. There was just no way to keep them clean. Besides being just plain disgusting, it was not a healthy environment in which to live, and to raise a child. And ever since our son was born, we've had a lot less time for the dog. It had basically become an untenable situation for all of us.
Thankfully the organization we adopted Floyd from is serious about taking care of these animals and asks that if you ever think of giving up your dog, you please contact them first so they can take him back, find a foster home for him, and hopefully get him adopted again by someone else. We'd considered doing this a number of times over the years, but never got up the nerve. It's hard to give up a dog you've had for so long, even one as weird and gross as Floyd. But recently, for whatever reason, we just hit a point where we couldn't deal with it any longer, and poppy and I agreed it was time for Floyd to go. I called the place, and they called me a few days later to let me know they'd found a foster home for him. I dropped him off this morning.
It was hard to do, and we can't help feeling a bit guilty about it, but I think it was the right thing for all of us. Griffin liked the dog, but he never really developed a relationship with him. After all, he wasn't able to pet the dog or play with him, partly because Floyd was usually too disgusting to touch, and partly because Floyd would run away from him whenever he got close. So Griff might be upset for a little while that the dog is missing, but I think he'll get over it quickly. As for Floyd, we had some good times with him, and I hope he has a happy rest of his life. I think he will. He's going to get to be with other greyhounds now, and with people who have more time, energy, and resources to take care of him. I bet he won't even pee in his new house. Much.
P.S. Most of Floyd's stuff is not in any shape to be used again and we're just trashing it, but we do have a couple of dog toys that are mostly untouched, food and water bowls that can be cleaned and reused, some bandages, and some nail trimming equipment, so let me know if you're interested!
P.P.S. Oh, and also pee pads, of course!
P.P.P.S. Also also, a large bin on wheels for holding pet food. Has a capacity of over 50 pounds, so good if you have a large dog or lots of cats.
P.P.P.P.S. Also also also, that damn song is really stuck in my head now. |
