- Evan Shaner wishes a happy birthday to Comic Twart by posting a representative image for every theme chosen in the blog's first year.
- Dan Hipp illustrates one of my favorite moments from Return of the Jedi.
- Somebody made a board game version of a tower defense game. Sounds like it's pretty cool, too.
- Baby-sized TARDIS! I feel like Griffin should have one of these.
- I've been reading a collection of old Russian folk tales, so it was interesting to find this post about an upcoming novel that re-envisions the stories of old Russian folk figures. You can read an excerpt here. It takes the elements of Russian folk tales - the repetitions (often in threes), the moments of sudden and inexplicable magic - and analyzes and re-imagines them in the context of communism and socialism. It's absolutely fantastic.
- Now that a mad scientist is cloning a woolly mammoth, io9 has suggestions for some other extinct animals we might want to bring back.
- Fringe fans just have to love this "Walter is my homeboy" T-shirt. Because you know what? Walter is my homeboy.
- Good news, everyone! NBC has ordered a pilot for Ron Moore's police show set in a world ruled by magic - Precinct 17.
- Sounds like Marvel is once again making an attempt to turn Black Panther into a movie.
- The bikini- and carnage-filled trailer for the DVD/blu-ray release of the modern classic, Sharktopus, complete with catchy beach rock theme song.
- As the entire world knows by now, Anne Hathaway will be Catwoman and Tom Hardy will be Bane in the next Batman movie. It took me a while to mull this news over. I haven't seen Anne Hathaway in much. She seems a bit goody-goody to play Catwoman, but hey, she's an actress! She should be able to pretend to not be goody-goody, the way actresses do. Tom Hardy seems a bit of an odd choice, too, for a monstrous, wrestler-type villain, but Tom Hardy is awesome, and also pretty damn ripped, so I think he can pull it off. Plus, Christopher Nolan's instincts are pretty damn good as far as these things are concerned (anybody remember Heath Ledger, the best Joker ever?), so I'm cautiously optimistic.
- The 1600th episode of Laugh-Out-Loud Cats is pretty mind-blowing, you guys.
- Dark Horse/Mike Mignola need to hire Enrique Alcatena to draw a Hellboy book RIGHT NOW. I'm just saying. This guy is GOOD.
- Someone has invented a game that's a combination of bowling and billiards. That's actually kind of vaguely brilliant.
- Here's a video of someone throwing boiling water into the air somewhere where it's so cold that the water instantly evaporates (or turns to snow, or something - I don't know, I was an English major, not a science... guy).
- You can simulate a fake incoming call with Samsung phones? Hey, I have a Samsung phone!
- A guy attached a tiny video camera to some arrows and shot them with his bow! Nice!
- More and better images from the X-Men: First Class movie.
- Blastr has compiled an impressive list of 83 differences between Fringe's alternate universe and ours.
- Muppets inserted into 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- Cinematical gives us a rundown of at least 13 movies that you can expect to see ads for during the Super Bowl.
- It sounds like Johnny Depp may be taking Robert Downey Jr.'s place in Sam Raimi's Wizard of Oz movie.
- Even for a non-American Idol fan like myself, this recap of the latest American Idol is truly entertaining. I love the quick, spot-on critique of those horrible Bing ads, too.
- Btw, don't worry, George Lucas wasn't really serious about that thing about the world ending in 2012. He claims. He probably just wants to make sure no one goes looking for his secret escape spaceship.

The Hulk Thought of the Day |
by Hulk |
Hulk still not understand why game called "Super Bowl" when not one superhero involved. Hulk would be happy to make name of game more accurate - just invite Hulk to play! Or at least do halftime show. Hulk know how to entertain large crowds; Hulk used to be robot clown. |

- Nicolas Cage as every member of the band Dethklok. (Via)
- Supposedly Disney is so excited about Tron Legacy they're planning a TV show for 2011 and 2012, and another movie for 2013.
- Director Joe Johnston says in his Captain America movie, Cap's outfit starts out as part of his cover story, that being that he's a song and dance man in a USO show. Ugh. I'm starting to get really worried about this movie.
- Neil Gaiman appears to have written an episode of Doctor Who! Exciting!
- They're rebooting the Daredevil movie franchise, which makes sense, but for some reason they've hired as their writer the guy who wrote the Day The Earth Stood Still remake. But... didn't everybody hate that?
- The Planet of the Apes on Google Maps.
- Sony threw in a last minute bid for the Terminator rights. Interesting...
- The upcoming 2D Metroid game, Metroid: Other M, will supposedly focus on Samus Aran's human side. Hmm...
- They're putting out a new Blaster Master game on WiiWare! It's called Blaster Master: Overdrive, and you can watch the trailer here. The original game had a great soundtrack and was pretty cool, although it was also impossibly difficult. This new game looks very similar.
- LEGO roundup! The revolver and the Cloud Car are particularly cool.
- The Super Bowl was a pretty excellent football game, and the team I was rooting for won, so I enjoyed it. The commercials, however, were pretty poor - most of them were unimaginative and unfunny, and some were downright offensive. But none of that is what this bullet point's link is about. What I want to show you here is a recreation of Miami's Sun Life Stadium made out of 50 different kinds of junk food.
- I'm a sucker for assassin movies, especially assassin kid movies, so I'm interested in Hanna. It's about "a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who is groomed by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine." Her father ultimately becomes her nemesis, and Eric Bana has just been cast in the part.
- Ryan Reynolds and Brad Pitt are both interested in the main role in a Gunsmoke reboot.

- You just have to watch the video above. (Via)
- A couple of particularly amazing recent entries on the wonderful photo blog, Black and WTF.
- One of my favorite authors, Connie Willis, has a new book out called Blackout. It's set mostly in 1940s England, and it's about one of her favorite subjects: time-traveling scholars getting trapped in the past and interfering with history. It's the first part of a two-part series, and apparently it might be better to wait until the second one comes out, this fall, before reading the first.
- DC might really be moving forward with sequels and spin-offs of Watchmen, most likely without the help or approval of the original creators. Everyone agrees this is a terrible idea.
- The magma-hot writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci just signed a three-year deal with Fox. I assume this means they'll be launching a lot more shows for that network. They'll also be opening up their own TV production company. (Via)
- The annual simulation in the latest iteration of the Madden video game predicts that the Saints will win the Super Bowl. I'm not sure who to root for myself, but I suspect it will be a great game.
- An amusing Aliens/Space Invaders mashup image. (Via)
- These posters for both the original and remake of The Wolf Man are amazing. (Via)
- Yay, the Fat Wonder Woman Blog started posting again!

- The video above really blew me away. It's almost entirely computer-generated. It's not real; it's super-real. (Via)
- The guys who wrote Zombieland will be writing the Deadpool movie. Seems like good news.
- Production on Cowboys and Aliens, which will reunite star Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau, will begin this summer.
- As Sci Fi Squad points out, it's pretty funny that the lack of sightings of the Loch Ness Monster has led some to conclude that the monster must have died - but not that it never existed in the first place.

- That photo of the hilariously modified soda fountain gets a further, brilliant modification.

- Cinematical has a rundown of what movie ads we're likely to see during the Super Bowl.
- Pretty cool art blog, featuring some fun animated GIFs. (Via)
- Download a gigantic collection of lost pop music from the '00s here. Be aware, it takes a looooong time to download. By which I mean, I still haven't got to hear any of it yet. (UPDATE: I have since succeeded in pulling the whole thing down and listening to some of it, and it turns out there's some really fun stuff in there.) (Via)
- An amusing video of a couple of dudes recycling their Christmas tree by turning it into a rocket and launching it. (Via)

Hey, So... |
by Fëanor |
We're having a kid. Just so you know.
We figure poppy's just getting out of the first trimester and heading into the second. She's doing well so far. We expect the child to arrive on Earth around mid-April.
I have Plans for the child. Plans! Mwa ha ha ha! Mostly they involve avoiding Fëanor's mistake of convincing he/she to join me in a cursed oath to fight anyone and everyone - be they Elf, Man, or God - who would withhold the Silmarils from us. Also, the child will be taught to enjoy the correct comics, music, books, and movies. And will hopefully grow up to be a talented doctor, athlete, or doctor/athlete, and make millions of dollars with which to support his/her folks in their old age.
I should add that my father, upon hearing the good news, immediately demanded that the child be raised to support the Eagles, and hate the Cowboys. To this poppy and I gladly acquiesced. |

- Embedded above is a trailer for Neil Gaiman's next book, Odd and the Frost Giants, narrated by the man himself. Looks like a fun fantasy adventure based on Norse mythology. I'm pretty excited about it. (Via)
- Old robots! (Via)
- Control your computer remotely using Twitter!
- Sounds like the kid who played Boba Fett in the prequels might reprise the role in the live-action TV show.
- A ping pong match done up as a Street Fighter bout.
- If I had a dollar for every time I've had to tell someone this... (Via)
- The 10 deadliest gunslingers. (Via)
- Corn Dog Lip Balm. 'Nuff said. (Via)
- Download the Muppet Mashup album for free! It's "mashups, remixes, and covers of music from The Muppet Show and Sesame Street." I haven't had a chance to listen to it in great detail yet, but what I've heard so far I've really enjoyed. (Via)
- Mr. Bacon's Big Adventure Board Game. I'd play it! (Via)
- Space smells like metal. (Via)
- A salute to mad scientists in cinema. Great list!
- Cinematical picks five guys who could replace Nic Cage as the bad guy in Green Hornet. Good picks.
- Download Squad reviews iTunes 9.
- There's now a (sort of) free version of Dungeons & Dragons Online.
- This great video for The Dead Weather's "Treat Me Like Your Mother" features Jack White and Alison Mosshart shooting holes in each other with automatic weapons until they run out of bullets.
- An unlikely series of photos: Underwater Churches. (Via)
- Pics of folks in costume at PAX.
- A-Team might have its Murdock.
- Warner Brothers and Mattel couldn't come to an agreement on a direction for the Masters of the Universe movie, so they let the option lapse. Not sure how to feel about that. I would like to see a decent He-Man movie, but really, what are the chances of that happening?
- Well, this is confusing and odd. Columbia Pictures just bought an original spec horror action script called Supermax, which "takes place in a Maximum Security Prison for the Super-Natural as a skilled guard must join forces with a lethal inmate after a riot ensues in order to fight his way through various monsters and mad-men in order to survive." This is not the movie by David Goyer called Super Max, which is about Green Arrow fighting his way out of a maximum security prison for supervillains. Huh.
- The Road's release date got pushed back again from October 16th to November 25th.
- I'll take any opportunity to laugh at the Dallas Cowboys.
- Now that the day without cats is over, Cute Overload is having a bit of a cat overload.
- The best space porn of the year! (Note: not actually porn.)
- Even Playboy is jumping on the vampire bandwagon. (Note: actually porn. Okay, in fact, it's SFW. I just couldn't resist the joke.)
- Actual headline: "Killer birds bite off bats' heads." Actual line from the article: "Great tits have been discovered killing and eating bats by pecking their heads open." (Via)
- Here's a kitty who says "yum yum yum" while he eats. Awww. (Via)
- How about some clips from Pandorum? It looks rather snazzy... but it also looks a lot like another Alien clone.
- Toys R Us will pay you for your old video games - even the really old ones.
- Two short films about film, one by the Coen brothers, and one by David Lynch. As one might expect, the former is quirky and funny, and the latter is bizarre and disturbing.
- So it sounds like a Pixar Ant Man probably won't happen. Sigh.
- The top ten African-American sci-fi characters. I love Parker from Alien! Yaphet Kotto rules. But c'mon, Storm sucked in the X-Men movies.
- Apparently when you shake the controller in Ninja Gaiden Sigma II, you can make the woman character's boobs bounce. I am simultaneously horrified and impressed.
- Chibi Namor and Punisher! And also somebody called Gentleman Ghost.
- Apparently Google made the search box slightly bigger? I hadn't noticed myself.
- An excellent true tale of conversational vengeance.
- Here's something to freak you out: scientists figure velociraptors would climb trees and jump on their prey from above.
- "An 18 year-old from a rural village in Nepal has invented a type of solar panel that replaces expensive silicon with cheap, easily replenished human hair."
- LEGO Star Wars chess set.
- Facebook is apparently stealing Twitter's "mentions" concept. (Via)
- A review of The Beatles: Rock Band.
- HA HA HA HA! No.
- A cool photo from the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
- The President's response to hecklers, in a much cooler alternate universe. (Via)
- Fun Greedo collectibles. I desperately want that T-shirt. (Via)

- Man, I just made some pancakes, and I don't know what happened. They cooked better and more evenly than normal, they were less runny, they were thinner, and I think they even tasted better. But I used the same recipe as I always do. I even kept checking it over and over to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything, or added a different quantity of something. I don't know what I did different, but I hope I can do it the same way next time. Tasty!
- Because Wegmans has a crappy selection of shampoo, I ended up getting Pert Plus with menthol last time I went. I thought it sounded weird, but it didn't smell funny, so I decided to give it a try. It's really weird. During and well after I rinse it out, I get this strange cooling/burning sensation all over my head. It's disturbing. Because I hate wasting things, and because I really don't want to go and buy more shampoo, I'll probably use the whole bottle. But it's freaking me out!
- Just caught a "sneak preview" (read: first episode) of Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes. It's a new, vaguely anime-style cartoon show about the FF. It was pretty fun. I liked that the focus was on Ben, and his fear of being considered a monster.
- I love these here Harry Potter books, yo.
- I'm so excited that college football is back! Starting now and continuing into the foreseeable future, whenever we put the TV on, there will probably be some kind of football on somewhere. It's a very comforting thought.
