- Egon 4-evah!
- Yep, been there, done that.
- This styrofoam cup art is pretty awesome.
- Mr. Hipp does it again with a couple of amazing Lord of the Rings pieces.
- A huge timeline infographic reveals what the future will be like, according to films. (Via)
- io9 offers you the chance to vote for the greatest use of pop music in all of sci-fi and fantasy. IIRC, I picked "You Could Be Mine" from T2, "Mad World" from Donnie Darko, "Johnny B. Goode" from Back to the Future, and "Day-O" from Beetlejuice.
- io9 has also collected for you the most amazing space pictures of 2011.
- Doctor Who My Little Ponies!
- What if Darth Vader's infamous "Nooooo!" were edited into other classic movies? In that same vein, here's Star Wars before and after blu-ray-ification.
- The first two episodes of a new Fringe web series.
- The trailer for Luke Cage! (OK, not really. Sorry to disappoint you there.)
- I usually avoid reposting Blastr's top ten lists, because that's all they ever post and it's kind of sad (although I don't have much room to talk...), but this one is rather fun: fake TV shows inside of real TV shows. Itchy & Scratchy is a classic, of course, and All My Circuits is always hilarious.
- Apparently carrots are only orange for political reasons.
- More of Sucklord's fantastic custom action figures.
- Cool piece of art created with tape. Also, Olly Moss' scary/funny Pikachu, and Kate Beaton's more accurate version of the Cheesecake Factory's logo.
- Lovecraftian lollipops! They're unspeakably delicious!
- Huh. Threadless is doing a pretty cool new thing.

On the Viewer - Fringe (Season 3, Episode 14 - "6B") |
by Fëanor |
As usual, beware spoilers!
We begin with a haunted apartment building, and what I believe is a vanishing balcony. Strangely terrifying!
Walter is singing a song about pancakes and making a fancy breakfast just because Olivia is coming over. Awkward!
Peter tries to convince Walter that his relationship with Olivia is none of his father's concern. Uh, actually, it's of great concern to two whole universes!
Walter: "Breakfast! The most important meal of the day. And I proved it in 1973!"
Yep, Walter's clumsy attempt to fix Peter and Olivia's relationship with breakfast was about as awkward as one could have expected.
Name of the haunted apartment building? Rosencrantz. Walter proceeds to do a coin-flipping test that reminds me of a scene in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Every flip comes up heads.
Walter: "Like the other universe, our world is starting to come apart at the seams."
Oh crap! That's an interesting development.
Walter is super pissy. Man, the guy learns the universe is falling apart and it's like his whole day is ruined.
Also, interestingly enough, Walter wants the case files and notes from one of their first cases together - the one where everybody on a bus got sealed in amber. I wonder why?
Olivia: "Peter, you glimmered. When we kissed, you glimmered."
Awkward! Now Peter should say, "I'm sorry, this has never happened to me before!"
Instead there is gooey relationship talk about how maybe Olivia just can't open up. Blah blah blah, get back to the haunted building. (I'm half kidding. I'm fascinated by how different this Olivia is from Faux-livia - that she's so unable to be vulnerable around people.)
Walter: "There's no such thing as ghosts."
Peter: "That's where you draw the line? Ghosts?"
Heh. Good point.
Walter reveals that William Bell thought it might be possible to capture the energy of dead people using "soul magnets." I thought for a second there he was going to mention traps and containment systems and this was going to be a Ghostbusters reference.
Walter: "He said if he were right he would contact me from the Great Beyond. I haven't gotten the call yet."
Of course! The amber from the bus attack is the same stuff they use to block up holes in the universe on the other side. Now they might have to start using it on this side.
Peter: "Not exactly how you imagined meeting the President, huh?"
Broyles: "I already know him. He doesn't like me - I beat him at golf."
Pretty cool premise this episode. A coin flip decides which member of a couple dies. In one universe, the woman dies. In the other universe, the man dies. Their grief for the other is so great that a soft spot is created between universes and they're able to see through to the version of their significant other that's still alive on the other side. Walter calls it "emotional quantum entanglement." It's also a case of "spooky action at a distance," of course.
Broyles: "You think all of this is because of feelings?"
Heh. Yeah, it sounds pretty lame when you put it that way.
So they have to solve the problem of the universe breaking apart using... grief counseling?
Of course, the episode where Peter is trying to learn to let go of the alternate universe version of the woman he loved, he has to help convince a woman to let go of the alternate universe version of the man she loved. Fringe does love its story parallels.
I like the subplot here: Walter faces the same problem Walternate is faced, realizes that he might have to use Walternate's solution, and comes face to face with the fact that maybe Walternate isn't as evil as he wants to believe. Fringe also loves its moral ambiguity.
Oh lord, the scenes with Olivia and Peter alone together are just agonizing in their awkwardness. (I think I used the word "awkward" in various forms more times in this review than in any other before.) I'm not seeing any real chemistry. It just feels like they're forcing things. I guess we all have to cheer them on, though, because apparently if Peter doesn't get with Olivia, our universe is doomed!
I was wondering whether Fringe Division on the other side was detecting any anomalies; at the end, we briefly jump sides and discover that yes they did, but by the time they get there to check it out, it's all over.
This episode has some cheesy bits, and for whatever reason Olivia and Peter's relationship isn't working so well for me anymore, but still, it's a pretty effective story with some intriguing plot threads, and opens up some new and interesting subjects for future exploration. |

- A lovely illustration.
- Evan Shaner demands that you OBEY GRODD!
- Another fine Star Wars illustration from Mister Hipp.
- That art jam blog I like so much recently took on Ghostbusters with some wonderful results.
- Some very nice Battlestar Galactica puppets are up for sale on eBay. C'mon, you know you had that Battlestar Galactica puppet show all planned out in your head and were only waiting for this moment to realize it.
- If you are a fan of both the Phoenix Suns and Star Wars, then today's TeeFury offering is for you. (Via)
- Cinematical has some quick news bites: Nathan Fillion will voice Hal Jordan in the animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Also, there's going to be a How to Train Your Dragon 2 about Hiccup becoming the leader of his Viking clan. Poppy and I watched the original How to Train Your Dragon a little while ago, and although it was very predictable, it was also entertaining and surprisingly moving.
- Heh. This Wicked Witch of the East doorstop is pretty clever.
- Watch a creepy trailer for a movie called Frankenstein's Army, which is set near the end of WWII, and features Hitler using Victor Frankenstein's notes to replenish his dwindling troops in just the way you might expect.
- Speaking of trailers, Cinematical has the trailers for Thor and Captain America running back to back here. The Cap trailer is looking good! I'm excited.
- The other day I posted an unofficial, bootleg sort of video of Galactus in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so I thought I should follow up with the official video, which is no less terrifying. (Via)
- Behold the genius of the Keep Calm and Carry On poster generator. (Via Amy)

- All Terrain Ice Cream Truck!
- A scientist is going to clone a mammoth! On the one hand: awesome!!! On the other hand: the movies have taught us that this is certain to go horribly awry so... hmm.
- Heh. Here's a fun X-Men family tree.
- A man in southern Georgia is using webcams, a bunch of shotguns, and remote controls to kill wild hogs over the internet.
- Remember that cool Mortal Kombat video that went around the internet a while back? Warner Premiere has green-lit a 10-episode web series based on it. Nice!
- So, that Alien prequel that's been in development forever is not happening after all, which is sad, but apparently Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof are going to salvage what they can from the script and turn it into a different movie called Prometheus, still starring Noomi Rapace.
- A Wrinkle in Time reenacted in 90 seconds by a cast of mostly kids.
- Joseph Conrad co-wrote a sci-fi novel with Ford Madox Ford called The Inheritors. It's about people from the Fourth Dimension scheming to occupy the Earth. Who knew?? Anyway, you can download the whole thing for free right here. (Via)
- Ron Howard talked a bit about his Dark Tower project when he appeared on Howard Stern's radio show recently, providing a few more details about how the story would be split up between the movies and the miniseries, and also confirming that Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem are the frontrunners to play Roland. I'd love either of those actors in that part. I really hope they can actually pull this off somehow.
- More great posters have popped up on Reelizer.
- In a painfully appropriate twist, some Pakistani-produced candy bars called Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge were recently found to contain more than twice the PPM (parts per million) of lead tolerated by the FDA.
- Hey, that Lord of the Rings/dollar bill mashup T-shirt that was up for vote on Threadless a while back made it through and is now purchasable! (Via)
- Some great pieces from a recent video game-themed art show.
- Science is cruel sometimes. Here's an old video of a couple of guys dropping cats in regular old 1G, then tossing them around in 0G.
- A LEGO version of the trap from Ghostbusters.
- A truly wonderful SNL digital short in which Pee-Wee Herman and Andy Samberg get wasted together.
- Cinematical has a couple of intriguing/amusing pics from Syfy's next opus, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, which features the talents of both Debbi Gibson and Tiffany, not to mention a giant snake and a giant gator.
- Robert Downey Jr. is going to play everybody's favorite super-smart, talking, time-traveling dog in a DreamWorks animated film version of the Rocky and Bullwinkle short, Peabody and Sherman. How... odd. Seriously, who will even want to see this movie?
- Some cool new pics from Captain America and Thor.

- A trailer for a kinda creepy, kinda sad-looking robot love story by Spike Jonze called I'm Here, sponsored by Absolut. (Via)
- How about this whole 3D revolution? I guess that Dreamworks guy was right about it taking over. Anyway, looks like Tron Legacy will be using 3D only in the scenes set in Tron's world; Clash of the Titans might be converted to 3D; and we could see Ghostbusters 3 in 3D, too.
- Somebody worked out the science of those thruster rockets that R2-D2 whips out in the prequels (even though he never used them later on in the original trilogy, which makes no sense) and found that for them to work the way they appear to, R2 would need to weigh only 100 grams. Whoops. Of course, the Star Wars movies also feature sound in space, so it's not like George was ever that concerned with being true to physics.
- Frank Darabont will be adapting the zombie comic The Walking Dead into a TV series for AMC. I'm getting a little tired of zombies, and I never read the comic, but the fact that Darabont is involved is interesting.
- The new Conan the barbarian has been cast, and he will be played by Jason Momoa of Stargate: Atlantis.
- The 1,000 greatest films, as voted by "critics, filmmakers, reviewers, scholars and other likely film types." All the usual suspects, pretty much. Generally good picks, although I have my usual quibbles (I still don't get what's so great about Some Like It Hot or Breathless or Night of the Hunter, and so on). (Via)

- While listening to the wonderful track created from Terminator 2 sound effects above, read this story about how Lion's Gate is likely to buy the rights to the Terminator franchise.
- There's going to be an American version of the BBC series Being Human. I'm curious. I watched the first few episodes of the original series and was impressed by it, but then I lost track of the show.
- Interesting plot details about Duncan "Moon" Jones' next film, Source Code: "[it] follows a soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is investigating a terrorist attack on a train by letting the government insert his mind into the body of a passenger on the doomed train again and again, until he finds the culprit."
- An anthology of original stories based in the Firefly universe is coming out, and Jane Espenson is writing one of them.
- Play First Person Tetris! As you spin the pieces, your view of the board spins as well. It kind of messes with your mind. And possibly also your stomach. (Via)
- A public service announcement: the upcoming Starz TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand will feature a nude Lucy Lawless.
- An interesting look at what James Cameron's Spider-Man might have been like. Which we might get to see anyway, as he's one of the directors Sony is considering for the Spider-Man reboot, along with Wes Anderson, David Fincher, and the guy who made 500 Days of Summer (Marc Webb). That's a pretty diverse group! Also, they're probably going to shoot it in 3D because, hey, why not, right?
- Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is coming back to direct the third entry in the series. Huzzah!
- They may already have a replacement for Robert Downey Jr. in Cowboys and Aliens: Daniel Craig.
- You can already reserve the disc that will allow you to stream Netflix movies on your Wii right here. It's free and will ship in the spring. (Via)
- An amusing Predator-themed image.

- Another great Threadless design, featuring a xenomorph nesting doll. (Via)

- Hilarious superhero missed connections.
- A "where are they now?" report, including photo, on the kids from the original Willy Wonka film.

- Hollywood studios are banning their stars from using Twitter because they think it's damaging the industry. This is the same shortsighted response to new technology that we've seen in the movie and music industries time and time again. Twitter is just another place you can generate publicity for your product! How is that bad?? Instead of sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling when something like this comes along, why don't you figure out how you can use it to your advantage? Idiots. (Via)

- Totally cute web comic.
- A team of engineers wants to enclose Houston inside a giant polymer dome to prevent heat and storms from destroying the city. Um... really??
- Marvel, you have enough comics with "Avengers" in the title, and way more than enough comics written by Christos Gage. Why are you putting Gage on a book called Avengers Academy, which will probably be as bad as Avengers: The Initiative? Please stop now.
- A preview of John Byrne's upcoming comic, Angel vs. Frankenstein. I generally like Byrne's work, and this preview is okay, but I don't know. This one sounds a little too silly even for me.
- Apparently there's an unaired, never-before-seen second pilot for Star Trek that's an extra long version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and it's going to be released on Blu-ray. One of these days I get the feeling I'm going to have to break down and get a Blu-ray player. In other Star Trek news, looks like the next movie has been pushed back from 2011 to 2012.
- A couple of Thor casting rumors: Robert DeNiro and Jude Law may have joined the cast in unspecified roles, and Dominic Cooper might play one of the Warriors Three.
- It looks like from these photos that the Cylons' "Plan" was to have a lot of sex. Which admittedly is a pretty good plan, but still.
- Fringe could be hurting in the ratings simply because there are so many other big, popular shows on Thursday night.
- Updates on the various X-movies: they want to reboot things for the Deadpool movie, and include the breaking the fourth wall stuff from the comics; the Magneto movie might not happen; and they'll use the recent, darker Harry Potter films as a model for the X-Men First Class franchise.
- Rumor had it that Jackie Earle Haley might play Sinestro in the Green Lantern film; he says no one's asked him, but that he's excited about the movie.
- A giant gallery of photos of old Halloween costumes (via). Speaking of which, here's a great Bender costume and a homemade exoskeleton costume.
- The director of the film adaptation of Ronin wants to do it in 3D. Oh my.
- Another Ghostbusters star talks about #3. Dan Aykroyd says they have a script but no greenlight.

- The 11 most disturbing "Tree House of Horror" segments from The Simpsons.
- Artist Paolo Rivera was left to his own devices when designing a journal about super-soldier experiments in the 1930s for The Marvels Project, so he slipped some Lovecraftian stuff in there. Awesome!
- R-rated movies as kids' books. (Via)
- Chris Kohler at Game|Life says Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is a great game, but it's not really an RPG.
- The bunnies do The Wolf Man. Fun enough, but not their best effort. (Via)
- 5 horror movies you can show your kids. Poltergeist? Really?! I don't know, man, that movie's pretty scary.
- Cinematical offers a list of five possible directors of the Avengers movie now that Favreau is officially out of the picture. PLEASE GOD NO NOT PAUL VERHOEVEN WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!!
- Look at all the new planets they found! And some are Earth-like!
- 10 things parents should know about Where the Wild Things Are. Really this could be boiled down to one item: your kids probably won't like it.
- A truly epic entry on Animals With Lightsabers.
- Cool robot posters.
- A video showing a proof of concept demonstration of playing D&D using Microsoft Surface. Pretty cool!
- Words to live by. (Via)
