Taken, and the Future of Comics |
by Fëanor |
You may or may not have noticed that I haven't posted a new episode of The Take in a long time. This time it's not just because I'm too lazy to write it! It's also because I gave up buying comic books about a month ago. It was a hobby that was taking up too much of my time, too much of my money, and too much space in my house.
That being said, I miss my comics. I miss them bad. And I'd really like to keep reading the better ones if it is at all feasible. I figure I have two options: buy the collections of the series I like best in trade paperback form when they finally get released that way, or switch to digital comics. Digital comics seem like a great option: they're cheaper, buying them doesn't require me to go on a long trip anywhere, reading them doesn't require me to carry them around or take care of them, and holding onto them doesn't require any physical space.
Here's the thing, though: I can't figure out digital comics at all. I'm Googling, I'm looking at FAQs, and I just can't figure these things out. Do all comics get released digitally at around the same time they get released in shops? If not, are they all going to get digitized eventually or am I out of luck if I want that one issue of that one series? Is there some central website I can go to and buy comics from every publisher, or do I need to subscribe to/buy from each publisher separately? Can I subscribe and grab what I want whenever, or do I need to buy the books one at a time? Can I read them online or do I need some special device? Why is it so hard to figure out the answers to these questions?
Anybody out there have any insights? I am pretty frustrated here. |

by Fëanor |
(UPDATE: Thanks to John, I now know all of them except one! And he's the hardest, as he's the most generic looking. Anybody?)
I've been meaning to do this for a while, and Free Comic Book Day seems like an appropriate time. Below is a photograph (taken by poppy - thanks, poppy!) of a shirt I bought at Target a while back which features illustrations of various comic book characters, I believe all from the Marvel Comics universe. I love the shirt, but I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure of the identities of some of the characters. Can anyone help?
To make it easier to point out which guy we're talking about, let's label the rows with letters and the columns with numbers. Here's what I have so far:
A1: Triton (thanks, John!)
A2: Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic
A3: Steve Rogers/Captain America
A4: Norrin Radd/Silver Surfer
B1: Luke Cage/Power Man
B2: Peter Parker/Spider-Man
B3: Bruce Banner/The Hulk
B4: Karnak (thanks, John!)
C1: Thor
C2: Ben Grimm/The Thing
C3: Blackagar Boltagon/Black Bolt
C4: Gorgon (thanks, John!)
D1: T'Challa/Black Panther
D2: Johnny Storm/The Human Torch
D3: ?
D4: James Howlett/Wolverine |

by Fëanor |
poppy and I are strongly considering making the great leap into the unknown and switching from the dreaded Comcast cable to Verizon FiOS. (And by "strongly considering" I mean that I am still thinking about it, and poppy has made up her mind - she wants FiOS.) Opinions? Recommendations? Stern warnings? Gibbering madness? |

Your Recommendations Requested |
by Fëanor |
-My iPod earbuds are dying. Can anyone recommend a good replacement? I don't mind spending a little money for something quality that will last; I just want decent, portable headphones.
-I read a lot of blogs, but no music blogs, and I'd really like a site that can keep me updated on which band is putting out a new album and when, and which band is breaking up, and so forth. Anybody know of a good one? |
