(Last updated on Saturday, June 1, 2013 02:16 PM) | A Trip to Jiffy Lube |
by Fëanor |
I took the car to Jiffy Lube today for the "Signature Service" (which is an oil change, plus whatever else they can talk me into, which is usually one or two relatively expensive extras). Brought the kid with me. He was good.
I should mention the only maintenance I have ever personally performed on my vehicle is that once or twice I've helped to replace a flat tire with a donut, and a few times when I was out of state I personally poured gas into the tank. If there is ever some apocalyptic scenario wherein all the mechanics are killed and I somehow survive, the car will be a wreck in no time.
So I felt my manhood shrivel up and cower inside me in the Jiffy Lube waiting room as two muscular contractors talked about all the giant stuff they've built and how they only take their big old trucks to Jiffy Lube for oil changes (more cost effective) and do the rest of the maintenance themselves. By the end of the visit they had exchanged names and business cards. Meanwhile, the lady at the register was wishing all the male customers a Happy Father's Day. Which seemed weird to me, as first of all, it is not Father's Day yet, and secondly, I was the only one there with a kid, and what the hell, maybe he wasn't even mine, you don't know!
Anyway. That's my story. Bye. |

Cars |
by Fëanor |
While driving poppy to work this morning, a white Mercedes Benz with tinted windows pulled out in front of us. I'm already thinking, rather uncharitably, "The person driving this car is probably a jerk." Then I see that the license plate is a personalized one reading "ON QVC," and it is set in a "Mercedes Benz of Beverly Hills" license plate frame. Yeah, that person is definitely a jerk. Also, I nearly choked myself laughing. Did they somehow get the car from QVC? Does QVC sell cars? Or is this a person who often hosts QVC specials? Regardless... wow.
Later on, saw another car with a personalized license plate: "MIN RICE." Does that mean something I don't know or does this person just really love minute rice? |

- An amazing, 11-minute, Spike Jonze-directed, Beastie Boys music video starring action figures in all the roles. It features zombies, a yeti, a shark, and plenty of the old ultra-violence.
- Guillermo del Toro is doing a Beauty and the Beast adaptation starring Emma Watson, who is disturbingly hot.
- Here's a video from Toyota showing off their concept of a car window as a touch-sensitive smart device. Woah.
- I don't have the time to read it just now, but maybe you do: Neil Gaiman's short story "The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains." I like the title, anyway. (Via)
- Here is an astonishing product: glow-in-the-dark rats that you can wear on your fingers, which are advertised as "Ideal for NIGHT BLOGGING."
- Remember Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake's "History of Rap" medley from a while back, and how it was way better than it should have been? They've done another one, and if anything it's even better.
- Here's the trailer for the new Spider-Man movie. Can't say I'm too impressed. The dude playing Peter Parker looks ridiculous (what is with the two-foot high haircut?), and dragging his parents into the story seems unnecessary. That being said, the first-person shooter-style final sequence is pretty exciting. I assume that's what the video game version will be like?
- Take a gander at the craziest experimental weapons of the 19th century.
- Concept art from the third Riddick movie.
- Helena Bonham Carter is joining Johnny Depp on the cast of The Lone Ranger.
- Speaking of casts, here's the latest casting news for season 2 of Game of Thrones. We now have Stannis, Melisandre, and Davos. I'm not familiar with any of the actors, but they all look right, at least, and everybody else on the cast so far has been so great, it's hard to imagine they will be bad. (There goes the rumor that Eccleston will play Stannis. Ah, well. Maybe he'll show up as Balon Greyjoy.)
- I am intrigued by this short story collaboration between Lev Grossman and Mike Mignola - even if the only other prose collaboration I've read by Mignola was not so good.

- Empire Online lists the 22 most bad-ass beards in cinema. Nice picks!
- That is one fine teacup. Ia! Ia!
- Know those decals some people have in their car windows, featuring a cartoon depiction of each member of the family? Kinda cheesy, right? Here's a funnier, less cheesy spin on it.
- Mr. Dan Hipp celebrates the Green Lantern, and other green heroes and villains from throughout pop culture history. Speaking of Green Lantern, here's the Onion A.V. Club review of the new animated movie, and Ebert's review of the new live-action movie. Sounds like neither movie is all that great, but I still might have to watch them eventually, just because.
- Loving this Godzilla animated gif. (Via)
- Quentin Tarantino's western, Django Unchained, has a release date! It's December 25, 2012. Merry Christmas!
- The Academy is changing the Best Picture nomination process yet again so that there can now be anywhere from 5 to 10 nominees each year, depending on how many movies receive first place votes on 5 percent of total ballots cast. Wha? Why don't we just go back to 5, guys? That was working fine for a long time.
- Check out Sam Bosma's site - he's been doing sketches of characters from the Song of Ice and Fire books lately.
- This ad for the new Legend of Zelda game featuring Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda (who apparently was actually named after the princess) is pretty darn cute.
- A Pontiac built with an entirely transparent, Plexiglass exterior for the 1939 New York World's Fair is going up for auction and has been appraised at a price between $275,000 and $475,000. Click through for some awesome pictures.
- I'm mostly over impressive replicas of things in cake form, but this Millennium Falcon cake has working lights!!
- The Wolverine has a new director and it is James "Not Darren Aronofsky" Mangold. Hmm. I've seen a handful of Mangold's films. Of those, Cop Land was the only really good one. Identity and 3:10 to Yuma were both well done but had disappointing endings. So I guess we'll see!
- Watch the red band trailer for Attack the Block, which is a sci-fi/action/comedy featuring Nick Frost and South London hoodlums versus aliens. Fun! (Via Blastr, a site that cleverly got the movie's title wrong in its headline. Sigh.)
- The most bad-ass way to chop lettuce ever.
- The rotary mechanical smartphone.
- Another fun Super Punch image roundup. My favorite is the hipster Jesus sign. The whale shark thing is just horrifying.
- Amazing photograph of an Irish castle.
- In case you missed it when I posted it to Twitter, a gallery of amazing illustrations by Blade Runner concept artist Syd Mead. (Via)
- So what's all this Pottermore stuff about? It appears to be official, from J.K. Rowling herself, and the obvious implication is that we can expect more Harry Potter. Possibly it's just referring to an encyclopedia, which isn't all that exciting. But still... squee? Anyway, while we're talking Harry Potter, check out the latest trailer for the last movie. It is mighty exciting, and the emotional opening nearly made me break down at my desk here.
- I enjoyed this latest post from the mostly-quiet-lately defective yeti.
- Hee hee. More amusing (and not-so-safe-for-work) sketches from the mighty Kate Beaton.
- Did you see that Comic Twart is doing Princess Bride? Anybody want a peanut?
- Ooh, they've cast Bard and Smaug in The Hobbit! Benedict Cumberbatch, who made a very fine Sherlock Holmes in the recent BBC TV series, will play the part of the dragon. I'm not familiar with the dude playing Bard (Luke Evans), but he certainly looks the part.

- NASA is auctioning off a huge number of items on January 13th. Check out a preview here. Up for sale are the flight plan that went to the moon, a lunar meteorite, and Buzz Aldrin's 8th grade report card. (Via)
- The guy who made the Tin Man and Alice miniseries for Syfy is making a four-hour Peter Pan prequel called Neverland - you can watch a behind-the-scenes teaser video here. The filmmaker tells us it will reveal what Neverland is, and where Peter Pan and the Lost Boys came from. Which are things I think we're better off not knowing, actually, but... okay. Interestingly, Bob Hoskins will reprise the role of Smee, which he first played in 1991's Hook.
- A synopsis and some pics from Steven Spielberg's upcoming time-traveling adventure TV show, Terra Nova.
- Blastr collected together the 55 "hottest" trailers for movies coming out this year, in case you want to kill some time watching a ton of videos.
- A gigantic infographic featuring every Batmobile ever (supposedly - it's hard to believe they managed to include every single one, seeing as how there have been so many).
- Tronified versions of Bambi and Stitch.
- As 2010 turned to 2011, Japan broke a Twitter record with 6,939 tweets per second.
- Wow, Fringe has got a crazy awesome promotional dealie going on. In the next episode, Walter is going to meet his musical idol, the keyboardist for a '70s band called Violet Sedan Chair. The crazy bit is, the show's producers actually created a vinyl album by Violet Sedan Chair called Seven Suns and shipped copies to record stores around the country. Each copy is unique and contains clues and spoilers about the show hidden in the lyrics and liner notes. Awesome.
- I've already posted about the rumor that Orlando Bloom might return as Legolas in The Hobbit, and how I think that could work. But now there's a rumor going about that Elijah Wood might reprise his role as Frodo, and that makes less sense, seeing as how his character wasn't born yet during the events of The Hobbit. I guess they could use him in some kind of frame story, but that seems rather lame and unnecessary.

- They're going to make a horror movie about an evil Paul Bunyan called... Bunyan. It will star Joe Estevez of Werewolf fame (yes, the MST3K movie), and it will come out next year. Amazing.
- io9 has collected the early reviews for Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. Some are criticizing the movie for its backward ways, but others are praising it. Hmm...
- Terry Gilliam might convert Time Bandits to 3D. He wouldn't be changing anything in the film, just putting it in 3D. I'd watch that!
- Apparently Sam Prekop of The Sea and Cake has a new album! I was excited about this, until I read the Onion A.V. Club's review, and found out it's basically just a lot of random noise. Not sure I really need to hear that.
- The Onion A.V. Club also has an interesting review of Metroid: Other M. The fact that it's sort of on rails is actually attractive to me, as I don't really have time for a game that makes me do a lot of wandering and exploring, but a lot of the other things they mention here don't sound very fun. Still, I'm intrigued. I mean, it's Metroid!
- Apparently they really are going to make a Doctor Strange movie and Stan Lee is going to have a cameo in it. Cool!
- The new (3D, natch) Judge Dredd film will be called simply Dredd and will star Karl Urban as the title character and Olivia Thirlby as his psychic partner.
- Ridley Scott has a few fascinating details about his Alien prequel. Also, Gemma Arterton may star.
- Dude built an impressive working replica of the motorcycle in Excitebike.
- Pizza soda and bacon soda? I'd try 'em.
- Pretty great 8-bit track with appropriate 8-bit video accompaniment.
- A pic from Duncan Jones' Source Code! It's not particularly enlightening or thrilling, but it's a pic from the film, nonetheless.
- LEGO TARDIS! Very nice. I feel like the claim that it's functional is probably an exaggeration, though.
- Masters of the Universe as a medieval religious icon.
- Love the Metroid print.
- Wizard Alley.
- Angelina Jolie leaving Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity almost killed the movie, but supposedly Natalie Portman might save the day by taking over for her.
- An interesting preview of Epic Mickey.
- D'oh. Sounds like Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote movie is dead in the water again, due to the financing falling through.
- Official sonic screwdriver Wii Remote??!!? Give to me! Now!

- Above is a fun techno remix of the Iron Man 2 trailers. (Via)
- Hey, remember Beck's Record Club? Yeah, I'd forgotten about it myself. This is that thing where Beck gets a bunch of musicians together and covers an entire album in a day. Each song is done with no rehearsing or arrangement and often in just one take. Then videos for every song are posted online. Looks like he's done three albums so far; the one I was interested in was The Velvet Underground record. (Via)
- Awesome story about the unorthodox method used to collect a large beetle specimen. (Via)
- Heh. Check out this trailer for the vampire comedy Suck. It's about a struggling band who discover that vampirism is their ticket to stardom, but then decide it may be too high a price to pay. It stars Alice Cooper, Malcolm McDowell, Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, and Moby. Looks like it could be fun. (Via)
- Warner Bros. is looking at fast-tracking one of two Wizard of Oz remake projects. The first has Todd MacFarlane attached as a producer, a script by A History of Violence scribe Josh Olson, and a plot that features Dorothy's granddaughter travelling to Oz to fight evil. I've thought about that and I've decided the proper response is "ugh." The other is called Oz and there are fewer details on that project, except that the writer worked on Shrek Forever After.
- Nic Cage as Guernica. Wow.
- Watch Godzilla movies for free on Crackle! (Via)
- If you hadn't heard yet, Patton Oswalt is writing a Firefly one-shot comic about Wash. It should hit shelves on June 2nd.
- Here's a car that runs on coffee. Dunkin Donuts should really sponsor this thing. I mean, it literally runs on Dunkin!
- Disney has cleverly turned its monorails into Tron light cycles.
- An interesting talk with Christopher Nolan about the third Batman and the new Superman. He provides very few plot details, but it's still fascinating to see where he's coming from and the process he uses. I'm both intrigued and frustrated by his insistence that Batman and Superman exist in their own worlds separate from any other heroes. I see where he's coming from, but... those characters have interacted almost from the beginning in the comics. And how awesome would it be to see them team up in a big-budget movie?? Answer: so awesome.
- Weird details from Jesse Ventura about a film shoot he participated in with Arianna Huffington and the Wachowskis (who are really not brothers anymore, as one of them is now a woman, and people need to stop calling them that).
- Horrifying! Real personalized ads, like those in Minority Report, are on the way. On the one hand, it might be nice to see only ads for products that are actually likely to interest you. But on the other hand... ew.
- A gallery of fun video game-inspired art.
- The final part of The Chronicles of Solomon Stone #2 is now live. Why? Because shut up, that's why.
