- If you have not been to the Windows 95 Tips, Tricks, and Tweaks Tumblr yet, you are missing out on something seriously disturbing and hilarious. Here is a representative sample.
- Pretty cool collection of GIFs highlighting the major characters from Return of the Jedi.
- Speaking of GIFs, I still deeply love flux machine. A couple of vaguely recent entries. That long, anxious moment as you wait for the GIF to do something creepy might be the best part.
- 72-year-old grandfather models women's clothes for his granddaughter's clothing line. Pretty bad-ass.
- Great redesign of Darth Vader.
- Here's an idea for a new James Bond film: Idris Elba as James Bond and Tom Hiddleston as the villain. All kidding aside, that would be amazing.
- Some great classic monster movies got redesigned posters on Reelizer lately. Here's The Mummy, a couple of Frankensteins, and an Invisible Man.
- You probably already saw this amazing photo floating around somewhere or other (like on any or all of my social media platforms). But have you seen the Spockified version??
- Brad Bird was forced to confirm on Twitter - numerous times! - that he is not directing Star Wars VII. Ah, well. It was a lovely dream while it lasted.
- Heh.
- Maybe people will finally wake up to the dangers of climate change when wild coffee starts going extinct? What a horrifying thought.
- Pretty amazing photo. And they went to a lot of trouble to get the shot, so worth a click.
- Fun toy roundup on Super Punch. Tis the season and so forth.
- Reimagining Snow White as an anarchist.
- A Stardust the Super Wizard action figure! There's a Kickstarter to make this a reality.

- Are you ready for the Dollhouse season premiere tonight?? If you're not sure, you might want to check out the handy chronological recap of (most of) season 1 embedded above. (Via)
- GMail went down again for a little while yesterday. Really, just the chat part, I think. Anyway, here are five things to do when that happens. (Via)
- The interrobang looks like a pretty useful punctuation mark. Also, great name! (Via)
- Beard of monkeys (via) and coat of bears.
- Surrogates comes out today! Here's an interesting promo, and reviews of the film from Cinematical, io9, and Sci Fi Wire. Unfortunately most people seem to think it's pretty mediocre, but poppy and I still want to see it. The movie's release has also inspired a list of the 10 best robot bodies to jack your brain into, and a couple of lists centering on Bruce Willis: the top five sci-fi movie heroes played by Bruce Willis (I'd leave out any mention of Armageddon - *shiver* - but otherwise this is good), and seven arguments for Bruce Willis as a great actor (agreed!).
- An interesting glimpse of The Tourist, a sci-fi movie that may never be made.
- New Daredevil and solo Silver Surfer movies are on the way.
- Cute Star Wars cupcakes, and 17 amazing sci-fi themed cakes.
- This Sunday's Simpsons season premiere features Homer Simpson playing a new superhero character called Everyman, and it was written by and stars the voice of Seth Rogen. I haven't watched a new Simpsons episode in a while, but I'm curious about this one now.
- This list of the top ten sci-fi horror movies has some great picks, but is way off-base on others. I mean, c'mon: Mimic is just bad; Scanners is mediocre, if fun; Event Horizon starts out creepy and then gets stupid and unbelievable; The Blob is boring; and Spielberg's War of the Worlds falls apart as soon as you touch it. I think my list would be something like this: Alien, The Thing From Another World, Aliens, Pitch Black, The Cell, Forbidden Planet, Village of the Damned (1960), Bride of Frankenstein, Terminator, Terminator 2, and Dawn of the Dead.
- Cool conceptual design for a geometric soda can.
- Cool abominable snowman sculpture, and an alternate skin for Operation. (Via)
- This week's Wired Playlist features covers of famous sci-fi TV show themes!
- Gyromancer sounds like it might be a fun game: it's more puzzle-fighting!
- Werner Herzog is going to do something called Rogue Film School where he will teach you how to live filmmaking as a way of life. Wow!
- "A research team at the University of California Berkeley recently announced that it has successfully implanted electrodes into a beetle allowing scientists to control the insect's movements in flight." Watch the video of the remote control cyborg beetle in action, then freak out!
- So... steakhouse or gay bar? (Via)
- Joss Whedon's best TV episodes ever. Some weird picks, but big yeses to the Angel series finale, the Buffy musical episode, Dr. Horrible, and of course "The Body." (Via)
- Hilariously bad orchestral rendition of the theme to 2001. (Via)
- The top ten science fiction movie soundtracks. A lot of good picks, but... Flash Gordon? Seriously?? That has to be one of the most embarrassing soundtracks of all time! (Via)
- Snow White and the Se7en Dwarfs. (Via)
- Some crazy candid video of wild turkeys attacking people near my old neighborhood. (Via Todd)
- Cool Legend of Zelda art. (Via)
- An autotuned music video-style remix of an episode of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. (Via)
- Top 10 unanswered questions in geeky movies. By which he means, plot holes.
- Movie poster mashups!
- A trailer for a crazy Russian anime film called First Squad, about a Russian medium fighting an occult order within the S.S. during WWII.
- The famous pop art portrait of Marilyn Monroe recreated with paint guns.
- An interesting report on playing Space Invaders Extreme with the Project Natal motion-sensing control scheme.
- Amusing disclaimer on the Ambien website.
- The 10 most puzzling ancient artifacts and an awesome concept car that's apparently more of a robotic exoskeleton. (Via)
- That Iron Man 2 set footage I posted the teaser for yesterday.
- MGM is so strapped for cash, the company might have to sell James Bond, The Hobbit, and numerous other franchises.
- Scream IV will begin production in April or May and amazingly they convinced Neve Campbell to return! But really, what else was she doing?
- Underwire likes FlashForward, and I'm hearing good things about it from other people, too. Damn! I thought this was one TV show I could avoid after the ads looked really stupid. Now I feel like I have to check it out.
- D'oh! If the Viking Lander 2 had dug its trench just 3.5 inches deeper, it would have struck Martian ice.
- Paul Pope close-ups! (Via)
- A first look at Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's Paul.
- Scientists have discovered fossils of a four-winged dinosaur!
- The 100 worst movies of the last 10 years! I am at once thankful and slightly disappointed to say that I haven't seen any of these all the way through, although I have seen bits of a couple. (Via)

- Behold the glory of the Bearsharktopus. (Via)
- Bad ratings for Leno's new show. Excellent. (Via)
- Joss talks Dollhouse; some promo pics from episode 3 of season 2 (via); all you need to know for season 2; and three clips from the season premiere, which airs this Friday night (via). The clips are seriously intense. As for the pics, looks like there's a fight with a croquet mallet in episode 3! I'm going to go ahead and assume the episode is based on "Musical Box" by Genesis.
- So the Soviets made a doomsday device called Dead Hand, and it's still active? That doesn't make me happy. (Via)
- Beatles/Star Wars mashup T-shirt. (Via)
- 11 great comic book robots. (Via)
- An important PSA. (Via)
- Olde timey Star Wars family photo. (Via)
- Cool monster. (Via)
- This video about an extremely dysfunctional Voltron-esque team of robot pilots is seriously twisted, and seriously funny. And it stars Fran Kranz of Dollhouse! Just beware the NSFW audio. (Via)
- io9's review of DC's latest animated movie, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, is not particularly complimentary. Bummer.
- A look at Ralph Nader's crazy sci-fi novel, which hit bookshelves yesterday.
- Sounds like that X-Men First Class movie isn't as ready to go as rumor suggested, but a fourth X-Men movie could be on the way, as well as a New Mutants movie! And that's not to mention X-Men Origins: Magneto, which Wolverine director Gavin Hood is now interested in helming.
- io9 takes a look at dangerous food technology throughout pop culture.
- This pic has been floating around the internet lately, but I've been avoiding posting it because I can't shake the idea that it might be faked. And also, eww. But it's just too sickly fascinating to hold off linking to any longer.
- There will be no Johnny Depp in the next Batman, despite the rumors to the contrary. Awww.
- Cops stopped during a drug raid to play Wii. Can't blame them, really. Drug raids must get boring.
- Pretty impressive projection system which animates your billiards experience.
- I actually think remaking Highlander is a good idea, as I always loved the premise of that film, but didn't think any movie in the series did as good a job of executing it as it could have. Unfortunately, the remake will be directed by the same director-producer combo that made the fourth Fast & Furious movie. Ugh.
- Somebody built a replica of the Galileo II shuttlecraft in their backyard.
- Clever conceptual video game shirts.
- The Miracle Whip commercials aimed at hipsters fascinate and amuse me, and I'd thought about mentioning them here in the past, but the ISS has taken care of the commentary for me, so I'll just stand aside while you click through.
- More casting news for Thor. The movie has its Sif, as well as a mysterious villain.
- Some interesting new briefs about Christopher Plummer's role in Priest, a Buzz Lightyear figure that actually went to space, and a legal fight over Voltron.
- I don't have a PSP and don't plan to get one, but I had to mention the return of Thexder because it was one of the first computer games I played and I remember it very fondly, even though it was punishingly difficult and I don't think my brother and I ever beat the first level.
- Weird tidbits from what are purported to be leaked minutes from a meeting between SEGA and Sony.
- God versus Hitler, Captain America style, and flying cats versus Nazi whales.
- Beware: you may live to regret what you do for a Klondike bar.
- Cute Spider-Man sketch cards. (Via)
- LEGO CubeDudes.
- Awesome '50s-style Batmobile toy and lovely Gorey-esque Alice in Wonderland illustration. (Via)
- I think Kristen Wiig might be my new celebrity crush. (Via)
- It's a CD! It's a vinyl record! It's both!
- Beautiful (and expensive!) sci-fi replicas.
- Warren Ellis' latest link dump has some really choice craziness in it, including a story about using magnetism and nanotechnology in concert to turn drugs on and off, and a story about a newly discovered dolmen.
- I've disliked Sony's PlayStation advertising campaigns for a long time now. The ads tend to lack real information about the product, going for over-the-top style instead of substance. Plus a lot of them are just really annoying. But this unaired ad for the console is truly beyond the pale.
- Uh oh, looks like Twitter is starting to roll out their new built-in retweet system, despite complaints from users.
- Diablo Cody might be adapting the Sweet Valley High books to movies.
- Some fascinating hints about what we can expect from Joel and Ethan Coen's latest, A Serious Man, as well as a discussion of filmmakers to whom you'd give the benefit of the doubt.
- A couple of interesting discussions of L. Frank Baum and The Wizard of Oz on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the film adaptation.
- A Tim Burton-style fashion shoot.
- Dylan Walsh, John Malkovich, and Scott Glenn have joined the cast of Secretariat.
- The 50 greatest directorial debuts of all time. I take exception to the inclusion of the highly overrated Easy Rider, Breathless, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Night of the Living Dead, The 400 Blows, Shadows, and especially the number one pick, Night of the Hunter (which is occasionally impressive and inventive, but mostly cheesy and bad). A lot of the other films I've sadly never seen. But I approve very much of the inclusion of Jan Svankmajer's Alice, Sam Raimi's Evil Dead, George Miller's Mad Max, Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, Shane Carruth's Primer, Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66, Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker's Airplane!, John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, the Coen brothers' Blood Simple, Terrence Malick's Badlands, and of course Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (which definitely should have taken the top spot). (Via)
- Ha! Google's found a way to turn IE into Chrome.

- Not only did NPH host last night's Emmy's, he also broke into the broadcast as Dr. Horrible! See the video above.
- Another awesome entry from Animals With Lightsabers.
- Great Carrie poster.
- Looks like the designer 3D glasses that Jeffrey Katzenberg promised would be coming our way are indeed in the works.
- The way to really impress everyone on a classy night out: put on your Super Mario evening wear! (Via)
- Star Wars reviewed by a three-year-old. Extremely cute and funny, and surprisingly accurate!
- In an interview with People, Kermit the frog insists he is not in a relationship with Lady Gaga, despite having been seen kissing her at the MTV VMAs. (Via)
- Details about an upcoming remake of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
- A burglar stopped to check Facebook on his victim's computer, but forgot to log out. He might as well have left his name, address, and phone number with the police.
- Video of a pretty hilarious Half-Life 2 mod, wherein all the sound effects have been replaced by voice imitations.
- Some fun sketches Dave Perillo did at Pittsburgh Comicon.
- Pretty funny: stormtroopers discuss the terrorist attack on the Death Star while on break at a bar.
- "An autonomous fighter jet called a Reaper was shot down over Northern Afghanistan last weekend after it went AWOL and attempted to fly outside Afghan airspace." Umm... that's disturbing. Are you sure that thing wasn't made by Cyberdyne Systems? And isn't it maybe called a Hunter-Killer and not a Reaper?
- Doctor Doom tries a new career path: infomercial host.
- io9's 10 favorite moments of space madness from throughout science fiction, and io9's 7 favorite sci-fi bars.
- A collection of portraits of famous science fiction authors.
- A couple more positive reviews of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I'm going to have to check this movie out.
- Disney is doing a computer-animated Rapunzel.
- Marc Toberoff, the lawyer who successfully sued DC Comics and Warner Brothers on behalf of Superman creator Jerry Siegel, has now brought a suit against Marvel and Disney on behalf of the estate of Jack Kirby. The estate is looking to regain its share of copyright in the characters Kirby created, and their use in comics and other media. On the one hand, I'd like to see Kirby get his due. But on the other hand, I'd also like to see more Marvel comics and movies about Kirby's characters! I hope a settlement can be reached quickly.
- A fun video collecting allusions to Tron from throughout popular culture.
- Okay, I've got to stop posting these soon, I know, but... here are a few more amusing sci-fi-related Kanye interruptions.
- A sequel to Street Fighter IV is on the way.
- Not only is table-flipping now a standard element of reality shows, it's also the central mechanic of a new Japanese arcade game.
- Toy Story ray gun controller!
- Creepy and cool Halloween food creations.
- A group of MIT students managed to Rickroll the entire campus. They added the first seven notes of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" to the campus' iconic Great Dome. (Via)
- The characters of Masters of the Universe go clubbing. (Via)
- Famous folks wearing the three wolf moon T-shirt!
- Cute Marvel merchandise.
- A Prius with 8-bit flames on the side.
- I can say from personal experience with my Dad's awesome Kitt-like new car that electric vehicles are remarkably silent. Too silent, some say. So Nissan consulted some music composers to add a custom engine sound to their electric cars, and they came up with a high-pitched sound reminiscent of the flying cars in Blade Runner. Awesome! (Via)
- Tim Burton interviews Ray Harryhausen.
- Video of a Left 4 Dead mod in which you must kill zombie Teletubbies. Hilarious and terrifying!
- Cinematical got its hands on some shots from the sets of The A-Team (it's the van!) and The Karate Kid.
- A rather interesting trailer for what looks like a pretty creepy and bloody film called Valhalla Rising. (Via)
- Heh. Gay scientists isolate Christian gene.
- In this goofy web comic, Jules Verne writes Edgar Allan Poe a fan letter. (Via)

- I may have seen this piece of art before, but the point is, it's brilliant: "This Game Sucks." (Via)
- Aww, cute little Cerberus. (Via)
- Keith Carradine's coming to Dollhouse. (Via)
- Weird Al's "Buddy Holly" polka. (Via)
- Power Puff versions of Hellboy and friends (via), and another cute Hellboy illustration.
- I don't know all of Sight & Sound's "Wild Bunch" directors, but the ones on the list I do know are definitely mad, bad, and dangerous. (Via)
- Release dates for some interesting upcoming movies are getting shuffled about.
- The Tournament is a cool idea for a movie - a giant battle amongst the world's greatest assassins - but the trailer is kind of disappointing.
- Pics of Jamie "Apollo" Bamber in Dollhouse! A cute little teaser for Fringe season 2! (Via)
- The secret lives of Stormtroopers. (Via)
- Apple's five worst products ever. It's always fun making fun of Apple products.
- Photos of erupting volcanoes taken from space!
- Very cool werewolf nesting dolls.
- Gameplay footage of Star Wars: The Old Republic. I doubt I'll have the time or money or energy to play this game, but I have to admit, I'm tempted. (Via)
- A LEGO model of Spock's ship from Star Trek. (Via)
- Some fantastic art pieces, including "Tiny Batmans in Peril."
- A gallery of costumes from BlizzCon 2009.
- Yay! Video of New Super Mario Bros. Wii! Mario looks so cute in his new outfits. And hey, looks like you can play with up to four players simultaneously - Mario, Luigi, and two Toads! Seeing a Toad throw fireballs is a weird experience. Definitely looking forward to this game.
- This seems a little over the top: a USB drive with a security keypad.
- As if having clothes with stuff on the butt wasn't bad enough, now there are Winkers, which are deliberately made such that the designs on the back will appear to become animated as you walk.

by Fëanor |
(UPDATE: Thanks to John, I now know all of them except one! And he's the hardest, as he's the most generic looking. Anybody?)
I've been meaning to do this for a while, and Free Comic Book Day seems like an appropriate time. Below is a photograph (taken by poppy - thanks, poppy!) of a shirt I bought at Target a while back which features illustrations of various comic book characters, I believe all from the Marvel Comics universe. I love the shirt, but I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure of the identities of some of the characters. Can anyone help?
To make it easier to point out which guy we're talking about, let's label the rows with letters and the columns with numbers. Here's what I have so far:
A1: Triton (thanks, John!)
A2: Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic
A3: Steve Rogers/Captain America
A4: Norrin Radd/Silver Surfer
B1: Luke Cage/Power Man
B2: Peter Parker/Spider-Man
B3: Bruce Banner/The Hulk
B4: Karnak (thanks, John!)
C1: Thor
C2: Ben Grimm/The Thing
C3: Blackagar Boltagon/Black Bolt
C4: Gorgon (thanks, John!)
D1: T'Challa/Black Panther
D2: Johnny Storm/The Human Torch
D3: ?
D4: James Howlett/Wolverine |

New Shirt! |
by Fëanor |
I've got a new shirt for you. It's been a while. I had the idea for this one a long time ago, but only just now finally sat down and put it together. It's just the store logo slapped on a T-shirt. But hey, I like the logo! And I also like the idea of somebody walking around wearing this, spreading the URL of my shop like a disease. Catch it! |
