Well, I *Almost* Got a Tattoo...
 by Fëanor

So, EverMike the Enabler (or Seamus, as we like to call him now, in an attempt to make his incredibly Irish name even more Irish) was good enough to set us up with an appointment for some tattoos earlier this evening. I'd been curious about getting one for some time, and when a bunch of our friends started getting memorial tattoos in honor of Sarcasmo, it seemed like a good time for me to jump into the whole ink thing. So I carefully composed the image I wanted using various screenshots from the internet, got Vis Major to print it out for me in glorious color, selected a spot for it (the side of my right arm, up near the shoulder), and today I got myself all nervous and psyched and we went on over to South Street to get the deed done. (For those curious, here is the image I put together:)

And then... total let down. The artist tells me she can't give me what I want. Or rather, she could try it, but it would come out bad. Turns out lots of small, straight lines are not easy to work with. Plus, no outlines = bad. And it would have to be really big to look anywhere near okay. And the colors would blend into my skin. Basically, I managed to make almost the worst tattoo graphic imaginable. I was pretty disappointed and upset, as I had gotten myself all ready, and we had the appointment and everything. I almost did something really foolish and tried to come up with something else on the spot that could work instead, but then I decided it would really be best, with something that was going to be this permanent, to just start all over again from scratch and take my time and come up with something better, knowing what I know now about what's possible and what's not.

And as time went on this evening, I actually started feeling pretty good about it. I'm not sure I like the Mario/invincible star image all that much, anyway. And now I've been thinking of some other cool ideas (like maybe Aragorn's sword with a glint of star light on it, or a star-related word in Elvish) which I think will actually work a lot better anyway.

So yeah, probably for the best. And I'm glad the tattoo artist was so up front with me and let me know that it was going to be hard and would probably come out bad.

And anyway, it wasn't a total loss, as poppy did end up getting her tattoo done. It's a nice-sized red star surrounded by three smaller stars and some star dust, and it's on the right side of her chest. It came out really nice, I think. I'll see if she'll let me post a photo. :)

Much thanks again to Debbie for coming along and lending moral support. And much thanks to EverMike for enabling everything - especially the comic book-buying afterwards, which added some much-desired books to my collection.
