The Take, Continued
 by Fëanor

BPRD: Garden of Souls #4 & #5
Finally got my hands on #4 of this story arc Sunday evening, and so was able to read it and #5, which happens to be the final issue of the arc. And I have to say, the conclusion was a little anticlimactic, and I was a little let down. It may have been partially because I was looking forward to reading these two books so much. But I was only looking forward to them because the first three had been so excellent. In these two issues, two of the interesting storylines (Liz's odd visions about her new girlfriend, and the glimpses into Daimio's mysterious past) were dropped entirely, and the main storyline (that of Abe Sapien's origin and previous life) was quickly explained away and wrapped up. All of the mystery, intrigue, and complexity pretty much got wiped away.

I mean, probably the Liz and Daimio storylines will be continued in later BPRD story arcs. And I guess losing the mystery is going to be an almost inevitable outcome of concluding a story like this one. But still. Disappointing.

Well, okay, it wasn't all disappointing. I still love those steam-powered robot bodies, the weird animal chimeras, the mind-controlling mummy, and the ultimate explanation of the plot as a way to save humanity from itself by killing millions of people and storing their souls in giant, super-powered bodies. Plus, Abe got to kick some ass. So, not a total loss. And I'm definitely going to keep following the book into the next story arc.
