They're remaking The Wicker Man! Neil LaBute is directing and Nicolas Cage is starring! So awesome!
What's The Wicker Man, you say? Check that first link, my friend. It's a fantastic old British horror/fantasy film from the '70s about a weird cult religion and sexual repression and orgies and burning people alive, and it stars the mighty king of horror/fantasy himself, Christopher Lee. It's totally awesome. And now two great modern talents are getting together to make a new version!
I know, I know, remakes of great old movies are almost invariably shit. And yet I almost invariably greet them with great excitement and optimism. Go figure.
Strangely enough, it looks like the director of the original film (Robin Hardy) is putting out a sort of sequel/remake to it this year called May Day. I doubt the timing is a coincidence. I wonder if maybe he's pissed that they didn't call him in to do the Hollywood version. In that quote at the end of that first article I linked to, he doesn't sound too pleased about the idea.
Anyway, I'd be interested to see both movies. |
