- Partly as research for my novel, and partly just because I like them, I've been reading tons of fairy tales and folk tales lately. So I was kind of excited to see that a big-screen, Hollywood adaptation of Jack the Giant Slayer was in the works. But I should have figured that in the process of creating such a thing, they would have added all the typical big-screen, Hollywood trappings to the story. Corny catch-phrases, lame love story, overwhelmingly huge action set pieces, bombastic rhyming prophecies, tons of special effects. Oy. This trailer is just gross.

- I really love the sweet and funny Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown, so it's pretty cool that he's doing a sequel called Vader's Little Princess. There are even holiday-themed downloads!
- I never got into Lemony Snicket, but I've heard great things, and we do have a book we really like written and illustrated by Jon Klassen, so I'm curious about this book that the two of them are collaborating on, The Dark.
- I'm fascinated by devices like this for some reason: a lamp that tells you the weather by recreating it inside your house. (No, it will not actually make it rain.)
- Andrew W.K. has been named the U.S. cultural ambassador to Bahrain. FYI. So they will be partying hard there soon, I assume. UPDATE: Somebody somewhere apparently realized this was kind of a crazy idea and cancelled the whole thing. The world is a sadder place now.
- Ironically, the most frustrating thing about watching this collection of the craziest fake ads from movies is all the real ads stuck in between.

- I enjoy my friend's Tumblr and its many gifs. Celebrating Ian McKellen, cat being funny, one of the greatest scenes from Clue, a hedgehog, George R.R. Martin being a dick, a statement of principles, and the cutest thing ever.
- I also am a big fan of io9. They've got clips from the special features on the Princess Bride 25th Anniversary release, an essay on the good and bad and in between of time travel stories; and a weird set photo from what will no doubt be a very weird movie, Darren Aronofsky's Noah.
- I guess the all-woman Expendables is going to be a real thing, because Gina Carano just got cast in the lead role.
- A wonderful new Wondermark.

- When I heard they were re-releasing the universally reviled Phantom Menace in theaters in 3D, I was really curious what kind of audience it would have. I mean, everybody says they hate this movie! Why would anyone pay extra to see it again in one more dimension than before? Then again, it's Star Wars. Star Wars has a certain cache. And nerds are famous for paying for things so they can then complain about them endlessly. Plus, there's the kid factor. Kids don't know they're supposed to hate The Phantom Menace. Well, looks like the nerd and kid factors won out, because the 3D version made $73.4 million in less than two weeks and pushed the movie's overall box office total over the billion dollar mark to make it the 11th highest grossing film of all time. Wow.
- Speaking of Star Wars, here are some rejected Star Wars products. Also, in the upcoming Star Wars game for Kinect, there will be a Slave Leia dance-off.

Because they are awesome, my parents look after our son twice a week (and sometimes even more often!). They also have an iPad which they allow Griff to play with. I've touched an iPad maybe twice. My son is thus better acquainted with this technology than I am. I guess that's something I'll have to get used to.
He started out by being mostly disinterested in what was going on on the iPad's screen and far more interested in the shiny snap on the outside case. But in a dizzyingly short amount of time he has become an iPad expert and now knows how to turn it on, unlock it, and play with various apps. In fact, he now requests the iPad almost as soon as my parents come in the door, by pointing at it and grunting.
I feel like now that he's become used to the intuitive, touch-screen interface of the iPad, he finds the clunky, counter-intuitive, non-touch-responsive interface of books to be a bit lacking. Luckily, he has found a way to make books into touch-screen interfaces, too. He simply points at or pokes an animal or object on the page, and then looks at us expectantly. We then provide the sound or name of the given object. He has trained us well.

- An amazing, 11-minute, Spike Jonze-directed, Beastie Boys music video starring action figures in all the roles. It features zombies, a yeti, a shark, and plenty of the old ultra-violence.
- Guillermo del Toro is doing a Beauty and the Beast adaptation starring Emma Watson, who is disturbingly hot.
- Here's a video from Toyota showing off their concept of a car window as a touch-sensitive smart device. Woah.
- I don't have the time to read it just now, but maybe you do: Neil Gaiman's short story "The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains." I like the title, anyway. (Via)
- Here is an astonishing product: glow-in-the-dark rats that you can wear on your fingers, which are advertised as "Ideal for NIGHT BLOGGING."
- Remember Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake's "History of Rap" medley from a while back, and how it was way better than it should have been? They've done another one, and if anything it's even better.
- Here's the trailer for the new Spider-Man movie. Can't say I'm too impressed. The dude playing Peter Parker looks ridiculous (what is with the two-foot high haircut?), and dragging his parents into the story seems unnecessary. That being said, the first-person shooter-style final sequence is pretty exciting. I assume that's what the video game version will be like?
- Take a gander at the craziest experimental weapons of the 19th century.
- Concept art from the third Riddick movie.
- Helena Bonham Carter is joining Johnny Depp on the cast of The Lone Ranger.
- Speaking of casts, here's the latest casting news for season 2 of Game of Thrones. We now have Stannis, Melisandre, and Davos. I'm not familiar with any of the actors, but they all look right, at least, and everybody else on the cast so far has been so great, it's hard to imagine they will be bad. (There goes the rumor that Eccleston will play Stannis. Ah, well. Maybe he'll show up as Balon Greyjoy.)
- I am intrigued by this short story collaboration between Lev Grossman and Mike Mignola - even if the only other prose collaboration I've read by Mignola was not so good.

- Mr. Dan Hipp celebrates the Green Lantern, and other green heroes and villains from throughout pop culture history. Speaking of Green Lantern, here's the Onion A.V. Club review of the new animated movie, and Ebert's review of the new live-action movie. Sounds like neither movie is all that great, but I still might have to watch them eventually, just because.

- Quentin Tarantino's western, Django Unchained, has a release date! It's December 25, 2012. Merry Christmas!
- The Academy is changing the Best Picture nomination process yet again so that there can now be anywhere from 5 to 10 nominees each year, depending on how many movies receive first place votes on 5 percent of total ballots cast. Wha? Why don't we just go back to 5, guys? That was working fine for a long time.
- Check out Sam Bosma's site - he's been doing sketches of characters from the Song of Ice and Fire books lately.
- This ad for the new Legend of Zelda game featuring Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda (who apparently was actually named after the princess) is pretty darn cute.

- I'm mostly over impressive replicas of things in cake form, but this Millennium Falcon cake has working lights!!
- The Wolverine has a new director and it is James "Not Darren Aronofsky" Mangold. Hmm. I've seen a handful of Mangold's films. Of those, Cop Land was the only really good one. Identity and 3:10 to Yuma were both well done but had disappointing endings. So I guess we'll see!
- Watch the red band trailer for Attack the Block, which is a sci-fi/action/comedy featuring Nick Frost and South London hoodlums versus aliens. Fun! (Via Blastr, a site that cleverly got the movie's title wrong in its headline. Sigh.)

It is mighty exciting, and the emotional opening nearly made me break down at my desk here.

- This new trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is thrilling, but a little upsetting to me. I don't remember a scene in the book when Harry grabbed Voldemort and jumped over a cliff with him. They're not trying to turn this into some typical action movie finale, are they? Because that would be very, very wrong.

I mean, just look at the last Terminator movie. Or, on second thought, don't look at it. It's terrible!

- A dude who writes Syfy original movies developed a new way to make ice cream.
- The first official, HD trailer for Tarsem Singh's Greek mythology epic, Immortals. Oh my God, it looks so good. I love Singh's other films, and was really looking forward to seeing what he could do with this material and a big budget. Looks like he knocked it out of the park. These are the thrilling, wildly imaginative visuals I've come to expect from this filmmaker. I can't wait to see the complete, final product.
- This io9 article led me to these two interesting pieces: Michael Chabon's appreciation of a wonderful little book I haven't read in ages, The Phantom Toolbooth; and an analysis of why Julie Taymor's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark failed.
- A couple of dudes were watching Game of Thrones, got into an argument over which of the characters was going to "win" (by which I guess they meant, take the throne and defeat all other challengers?), and it turned into a physical fight that ended with the police arresting one of them. Heh. That's silly, because clearly Jon and Dany are going to win, and I'll throw you through a window if you say anything different.
- The Beastie Boys are streaming their new album right here. You have to go and listen to it right now because it is fantastic.

I can't say this makes me feel particularly optimistic about this movie. You're trying to fix it by piling more effects on top? Yeah, that always works.

- Replacing the dialog in various scenes from Star Wars with depressing, existential French philosophy is surprisingly hilarious.
